Possibly - but I also haven’t found the statement that the streamer “is powered by Lumin” in the Quad marketing materials that I’ve looked at either…
In the Platina thread on PinkFishMedia forum somebody posted that Lumin was part of IAG group- must be duff info.
The reference to “powered by Lumin” was on a hifi retailers website advertising the Platina Stream for sale (can’t remember which one), and also on a blog page about the Quad Platina Stream and not directly from Quad. I presume they got this info from Quad, perhaps a wrong assumption on my part.
I don’t want to fall foul of Community Guidelines again by directly pasting the blog content, but if you seach Chiltern Audio, go to the Blog section you will find it there.
@wklie - are you able to cast any light on this “powered by Lumin” statement for the new Quad Platina streamer? Has there been a collaboration between Quad and Lumin on the firmware for the Platina, or is this just misinformation that has taken root. Thanks.
Edit: just done some digging and there’s certainly mention of collaboration between Lumin and Audiolab for the firmware of the Audiolab 9000N, so given the similarities between the 9000N and the Platina, it seems likely that the collaboration has widened?
To be more accurate
The range is made up of 2 models at launch, the Platina Integrated Dual Mono designed Amplifier and the Platina Stream, a Lumin powered Hi Res Streamer.
Yes, I believe this was to be able to deliver PlexAmp integration.
@Kev67 - What are you feeding the Platina into? The Quad 303 or another power amp?
I see that there’s (currently?) no power amp available in the Platina range, and personally I don’t see the point of feeding it into the Platina Integrated amp - too much duplication and wasted resources for my liking.
If I ever get a Platina streamer, I would just replace my Artera Link with it and feed it into my Artera Stereo power amp.
The colour of the original 33/303 combination was a sort of light bronze - I suspect that Quad have stuck to that for the revamped models, rather than making them boring silver… ![]()
Geoff,
I’m not using a power amp for the Platina. Feeding into my 33 pre at the moment.
I’ve no idea, but perhaps I could be more inventive/productive with the way I’m feeding the various bits of gear I have. I tend to just keep it simple for me lol.
The 33’s inputs are currently connected to the outputs of various pieces of equipment as follows
XLR to Platina Stream XLR
RCA to FiiO K17 DAC/Headphone amp
RCA to Rega Planar 6 turntable
One single XLR from each of my 303 power amps.
It obviously all works, is there any benefit to changing anything - the obvious being feeding the power amps from the Platina Stream as you were saying?
Given that you have a variety of sources, your current setup sounds fine. I’m in the situation where I have but one source - Roon - and so I would want to simplify as much as possible.
At least a German review that I have been reading today mentioned that the pcb and the class A output stage of the audiolab was designed by Lumin.
Strange there haven’t been any reviews of the Platina range yet. Review space pretty crowded these days though I guess, so many products released each week.
From the 2024 Audiolab review in What HiFi:
The introduction of the range-topping 9000N marks a shift in ambition, being pitched at a properly premium price, and with a change in streaming platform to one from high-end specialist [Lumin]
As I said upstream the Platina Stream is “uncertified” when looking at it on Roon.
Without periodically checking on Roon, does anybody know how you know when your device changes from “uncertified” to fully Roon Ready? Does it happen on the fly, after a device fw update, a device reboot…?
On Roon’s Partner page on the website it is not listed at all in the Quad section.
It will happen on the fly, once Roon Labs flip the switch in Roon Labs HQ. That will be done once the Platina that they have passes their certification testing.
And when that happens, it will also be listed on the Partner page as Roon Ready.
Lucky it was FOUR Times
QUAD have always known how to price but also how to make amazing kit
all taken up with Sennheiser HDB 630 or is that just what YouTube is bombarding me with
Gotta jump on that bandwagon while it is still hot! Shortly followed by lots of reviews stating it isn’t as good as everyone is saying it is. Just read a post on here about shilling too, there is a lot of it about in social media.
I must confess I am tempted . Its a toss up between Sony WH 1000 XM6 , Focal Bathys Mg and the HDB 630
In South Africa we get hammered on luxury goods , the Bathys is going to be R 39000 = $2166 compared with list $1300. The other 2 are more sensible at R 11,000 = $611 List is around $500
I already have the WH 1000 XM4 so its pure “want want want”
I have a support contact at Quad who I speak to off and on via email, and getting back to reviews of the Platina range (rather than headphones) he told me sample copies of the amp were sent out this week so reviews should start to appear in a couple of weeks or so. He didn’t mention the streamer. Must admit the news items from a month or so ago when the Platina range was launched definitely focused more on the amp than the streamer.
Platina Streamer now Roon Ready. May or may not be coincidence but I did a FW update yesterday and remembered to check status on Roon today and noticed it had changed from uncertified to certified.
