New (was back in 2021) iFi Zen Stream device

Ok thanks for clarifying.
So basically a high end music server without the $30k price tag

It will be interesting as Roon claims no SQ improvement from server hardware, but others are selling very expensive music server’s.

Hopefully it will be an interesting time when Roon announced their Nucleus replacement which might well be in the next 6 months.

Hey @DancingSea maybe my prediction for six months was a bit off

So we would believe that this has happened in the last 30 days? Interesting news. Personally I don’t see the value but I’ve haven’t been a nucleus customer in any case.
New products announced, business as usual? Good thing?

I don’t see value for myself either, but I am sure there is value for some in it.
When you can build a NUC based Rock in a completely silent case for $750 then this looks really expensive.

But if you compare it to Melco or other Music servers it looks really cheap and maybe Roon are going after that market.

I’m pretty sure there is a market for this, and as long as Roon continues to build Rock and supports Linux then I think we all win.

Samsung Harman are making a big splash at CES this week, I was just watching some of it on the television. Great news actually to see them keeping and embracing the nucleus, I’m thinking  Wood or stone trim :joy:

Haha! Interesting. My experience with Aurender has led me to believe there is something to the notion of a computer specifically designed for audio having sonic advantages over a general consumer grade computer or NUC. I returned the Aurender not because of sound quality, but because years with Roon made Aurender’s Conductor unbearable to use.

I’m skeptical that Harman has had much if anything to do with the Nucleus Titan given they just bought Roon last month. It takes years to develop such a product and Titan has likely been cooking for quite some time.

I do think that there is a hole in the market for audiophile quality Roon Cores. Other audiophile manufacturers seem content to create Roon endpoints rather than Cores, which means the Core is most likely to be run on a consumer grade non-audiophile computer or NUC. It also takes a certain level of system to hear a difference, but for those at that level, the Titan will be very appealing.

Also curious to see what the entry level Nucleus replacement looks like, as well as the mid range model.

Given they offered no assembled prototype photos, your Nostradamus activity remains beyond reproach

Perhaps mid year, right on @Michael_Harris schedule. Probably at the back of the queue for Roon Ready certification. We know that can take a while

From those who have expensive music server’s they do tend to say that they improve the SQ and often feel that feel that they have spent wisely.
I am not in the camp that has tried one (yes I am too poor :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:)

Not sure that this new server hits the target area of that, but it is a step forward from the current out of date models

Ha ha so funny.
They better get that A8 certified first or there might be riots in the forum :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

No we wouldn’t. Acquisitions like this are rarely dreamed up on Monday, signed on Tuesday, and announced on Wednesday

I guess this thread is technically still active.

All in all I’ve been pretty happy with my OG Zen Stream… occasional glitches that seem to get fixed by the old ā€œunplug it, then turn it back onā€ ploy. Very minor nuisance in the great scheme of things.

Today I was fiddling around with something or another, decided to see if my firmware was up to date, and got a message on both my devices and ifi.local which said ** Error: the current system version is larger than remote one. Aborting.**

Didn’t get much enlightenment from the Internet except that my firmware is clearly out of date. I took several deep breaths and decided to do a system reset from the stream-ifi app… something that always feels risky to me on a device that’s actually working satisfactorily if not perfectly.

At length (well, it SEEMED like a long time) the left red light was on, indicating that the reset had taken place (although the spinning wheel on the app was still going around and around). Decided to reconnect and after a couple of false starts was able to update the firmware and (after a couple more false starts) reconnect to Roon.

So, I’m really not sure what all that was about but it appears that I’m up to date now. Perhaps I won’t experience any more of those little glitches! Perhaps I will.

Anyway, I remain pleased with my ZenStream. A solid B+/A- Cheers.

Hi Stephen as the person who started this thread when I was curious about the Zen Stream, I still have mine as well and still rather like it, even though it had a very rocky start to life.

This message means you used ifi.local/dev at some point and put a beta update on the device. It doesn’t remember that and gives the error message. If you are looking for another update go to http://ifi.local/dev in your web browser and accept the beta settings and check for an update again.

Thank you Michael, that’s very helpful to know.

Hi,

I also have a Zen Stream (no issues with mine) and follow a thread on Head-fi where some people reported the same problem recently. As it turns out, it seems that IFi had to replace the latest firmware (from August 2023) with the same version on 11 May 2024. Apparently this version had problems and they put it down again. So, it seems you have to wait until they fix this issue and the update system is back and runnning. Someone also mentioned that they are no longer giving access to beta firmware for this product.

That I didn’t know, so thanks for sharing that, but I have not updated the firmware in many months.

Generally more recent updates have often made things worse and I think that the Stream has finally run out of Steam (or at least resource capacity) to add more features.

Still sounds great though and far better than my WIIM Pro Plus through my DAC.

Me neither. The current firmware is working without issues. Apparently they had an internal problem with their system and had to replace the update files. So, it’s a different matter, not the firmware itself, as I understand it. In the same thread they said that iFi are working on a new update to fix the Tidal HiRes change. Not a problem for those using Roon though, which is working smoothly.

I am having a problem connecting my Zen Stream to my Chord Mojo (the original, not version 2). I am using a USB cable. Roon recognizes the zen stream and plays to it, but the mojo never gets the signal.

I have tested both the Stream and the Mojo independently, and they each work without problem.

Does anyone have ideas about what might be causing the problem?

Sounds like the USB output is not selected inside the Stream, if my memory is correct Coaxial is the default output.
Have you checked the settings to see what output is currently being used.

Hi @adornoWest as Ace said you have to select the USB output in the web interface as the output in http://iFi local

Quick question are you running with the toggle at the back in setting 1 (All in One mode) or setting 2 (Room only mode)

Thanks to you both for the reply. When I read @AceRimmer’s reply, I thought for sure that was the problem. But as it turns out, there’s no option to output it to the Chord Mojo–it is as if the Zen does not see/recognize the Mojo, even when the Mojo is on. In contrast, it sees the other USB output to a Schitt Jotunheim with Dac, and it plays to that without problem.

In response to @Michael_Harris’s question, it is set to Roon only mode.
