I have the problem that there is no output playing ALAC / m4a files when both “REPLAYGAIN_* tags override Roon’s audio analysis” and “Use REPLAYGAIN_* tags when present” are set. No error message, the progress bar is also showing that the file is processed, but silence, just no output. Wirth FLAC it works flawless.
Have you installed FFmpeg on your Roon server?
No, FFmpeg ist not installed.
When tags “REPLAYGAIN_* tags override Roon’s audio analysis” and “Use REPLAYGAIN_* are NOT switched on ALAC / m4a files are played without a problem. The Server is based on Windows 10. roon core as well as music files are both located on this server.
M4A definately needs FFmpeg installed on the server for playback. ALAC is built-in.
The presence of ReplayGain tags shouldn’t affect playback, and will only be used when volume levelling is enabled, i.e., you can test your hypothesis easily.
Thanks for advice! But the bug seems still strange to me and I don’t see a solution, since m4a is played without any problem when the replay gain settings are not switched on. Will ask the manufacturer of the server.
All my music is tagged with ReplayGain, and play without issue. If you require Support from Roon staff, please follow this link, and answer all the questions.
Thank you very much for the link, I will use it to contact roon.
Hello @Volker_Rothenpieler
Thank you for reaching Roon support.
It might be helpful to have the file(s) for testing on our end as well, can please upload them here and let us know?

Thank you for your message. I just uploaded them.
Hello @Volker_Rothenpieler
Thank you for your patience.
I just checked your files on both my Windows and Linux server setups, and I do not see any issues with playback. Please note that ReplayGain tags themselves do not affect whether a track can be played – they are only used for volume leveling once playback is already working.
Could you please confirm whether FFmpeg is correctly installed on your server and accessible by Roon? This is required for certain formats like AAC/M4A.
