No playback if default playback device configured for 5.1 Surround? [answered]

Hi all, using latest version of Roon. Running HDMI from an nVidia GPU to an Anthem AVR. To get multichannel sound in games I go to Playback Devices > Configure and set it up for 5.1 Surround. Problem is when I do that, Roon still sees the AVR as an output device but if I try to play a track I get no playback. As soon as I put the configuration back to Stereo in Windows, it works fine.

I’ve tried this with fixed volume and WASAPI with no change. I’d rather not have to change the output configuration between normal audio and gaming but if I have to, that’s fine. I searched and didn’t see anything similar. Thanks for any input!

Hi @toddrhodes ----- Thank you for the report and my apologies for the issue here. The reason you are encountering this is because Roon does not support multi channel playback at this time. Which is why when you’re down mixing to stereo, by flipping it back over in Windows it is working correctly.

Making multi channel content playback possible in the future is in our minds and on our to do list, but we do not currently have a firm date or time when it will be available.

Hi @Eric! Is that because the device configuration is making Roon think it’s multichannel PCM? I’m just playing stereo files so I wasn’t sure.

I’ll make due with the current config, it’s not the end of the world
