I recently changed my desktop computer from an Intel based iMac to a Mac Studio with M4 chip. I'm able to enable the Mac Studio through AirPlay but not getting any sound to play through Roon. I have a Roon Nucleus for my Core. I've read others have experienced the same problem.
Describe your network setup
My network starts with a cable modem connected to a Google Nest with extenders in various locations. Meant to add above when I look at Audio in Roon Settings, the Mac listed at the top is my old iMac. I tried disabling those audio devices but doesn't change what's happening. I can select the Mac Studio as my audio device but it doesn't show anything selected is playing at the bottom. However, I can see the selected item is playing on Mac Studio.
Did you use Time Machine or a third party backup software to restore your older Mac database and settings onto your new Mac?
Can you also please test out:
Enabling the airplay compatibility tab within the zone/device settings once you’ve enabled your airplay device in Roon?
Test out adding your airplay devices to your Apple Home app and see if that helps? Here’s more info on how to do this:
a. Open the “Home” app on your iOS device
b. Tap the “+” button in the top right corner
c. Tap “Add Accessory”
d. Instead of using a QR Code to Add Accessory, tap “More options”
e. Wait for Home to scan your local network
f. Add the accessory. This involves connecting to the speaker, selecting the speaker location, and creating a speaker name
g. Now that the device is added, click on the three-dot ‘…’ menu on the top right corner of the Home app, next to the ‘+’ button used in step 2
h. Click on ‘Home Settings’
i. Set ‘Speakers & TV’ to ‘Everyone’
Airplay should now be enabled. The last step is to now open and connect Roon to play audio. Open Roon, navigate to your Roon Settings>Audio, and enable the recently added devices.
How do I enable the airplay compatibility tab within the zone/device settings once you’ve enabled your airplay device in Roon? I’ve looked for guidance online but not finding info. I’ve already enabled the airplay device in Roon but this sounds like another step.
Test out adding your airplay devices to your Apple Home app and see if that helps? Here’s more info on how to do this: I followed your instructions using Home on my iPhone. My Mac Studio doesn’t show as an accessory. All devices are on the same network.
Been working on this for several hours. The new Mac Studio will no longer connect using the Roon app to my Core which runs on a Nucleus Plus. Both devices are on the same network. I’ve rebooted both machines multiple times. My Core functions fine with my older iMac, a new MacBook, an iPad, an iPhone and several Apple TV devices. I’ve tried it with my firewall on and off. Can only conclude the current version of Roon is not compatible with the Mac Studio. As a long time Roon user with a lifetime membership I’m bothered by it. Can you advise further or provide access to an advisor who I can talk with? Thanks.
I checked the setting under Local Network. Roon was enabled. I toggled it off and on and then did a reboot. No luck fixing the problem. In setting up the Mac Studio using Roon Audio Setting I have a couple of options. One is to enable it using AirPlay under “Other Network Devices”. I’m able to make it active - also went into device setup and turned on compatibility mode. Not able to get music to play using Roon app. It appears to start playing but no sound and then it kicks off.
The other option is to enable System Output on the Mac Studio going through Audio under Settings on the Roon app. Nothing happens - a red indicator comes on saying “enabling” but nothing happens.
Any other ideas? I can’t be the first Roon user running into this problem running Roon on a new Mac Studio. Thanks.
i tried to follow your steps but the Home app doesn’t find the Mac Studio as an accessory. Still stuck without ability to use my Roon system on new Mac Studio computer. Other ideas?
A quick note here - We strongly recommend against using Time Machine, Crashplan, Backblaze, or other backup applications to backup your “live” Roon database. If you would like to use any of these applications to back up Roon, set up a Scheduled Backup and tell your backup program to backup the RoonBackups folder.
Because the Roon database is frequently being updated in the background with new metadata, cover art, artist information, and more, backing up your “live” Roon database using external programs can result in corrupt backups.
Did you use Time Machine on the new Mac Studio to restore your mac settings/profile from another mac in your setup?
