Not getting IPv4 address assigned to NUC from my Unifi Network

my hardware configuration:

PrimeMini 5/i5, 8GB RAM, 250GB M.2, SSD 1TB
Samsung EVO 860

Intel NUC 8v5PNB with latest BIOS version

Operating System: Roon ROCK OS 2.0 (build 259)

ISP: Deutsche Telekom VDSL 250mbps

Router
Unifi Dream Machine Pro with Unifi OS 3.1.16 bought and installed in July 2023

3 Unifi switches 24 POE bought and installed July 2023

LAN connection

Global Network Settings:

  • No IPv6 support
  • No Multicast DNS
  • No IGMP snooping
  • No IGMP proxy

Global Switch Settings:

  • No DHCP snooping
  • No Jumbo Frames
  • No Flow Control
  • RSTP activated
  • No 802.1 Xcontrol
  • No switch exclusions

my NUC running Roon OS as described does not get an IPv4 address from the router; this is only happing with this machine all other network devices get IP addresses assigned within seconds

Could you please have a look into the enclosed log files

Description of Issue

when connecting the Nuc to the Unifi network via LAN cable it does not get an IPv4 address assigned although Roon OS has been freshly installed and BIOS has been updated to the newest version
when enabling IPv6 and DHCPv6 on Unifi network console the Nuc gets relatively fast an IPv6 address assigned but no IPv4 address, when disabling IPv6 and DHCPv6 the issue remains that no IPv4 address is assigned
when accessing the ROCK teminal and resetting the network (enter resetnetwork enter) the issue still remains

any idea how to get the ROCK working in my network?

Ralf

Hi Ralf

Please check your DHCPv4 address pool size on your DHCP Server.
Do you have any VLAN setup or is it a flat network?
Have you double checked an other device on the same switch port?

br
Peri

Hi Peri, txs but DHCPv4 poolsize has more than a hundred free addresses left; Roon nuc is not in a VLAN; connecting the roon nuc to different switches or the UDM pro directly makes no difference. Also doublechecking with Multicast on/off and IGMP snooping on/off made no difference. Any other ideas?

Can you see the NUC from the UDM-Pro’s client interface?

If so, I would try allocating it a fixed IP address in Unifi, and then rebooting the NUC to force a DHCP lease renewal and see if that fixes the problem.

Hi Graeme,
txs for the reply.

The NUC is not shown in the udm pros client interface, also adding it directly to it with the associated mac-address for eth0 (lan port on the NUC - accessible from the ROCK Terminal if connected to a screen with “ifconfig”) didnt resolve the issue (tried with and without a fixed ip address in the udm pro clients interface).

Other Methods i already tried are:

  • Enabling IPv6 and DHCPv6 within the udm pro, which results in the NUC getting an IPv6 Address but no IPv4 address with the IPv6 Address the NUC is shown in the UDM Pro Client Interface but is not usable (seen on ROCK Terminal with ifconfig)
  • Disabling IPv6 and DHCPv6 again, with the result that the NUC obviously not getting an IPv6 Address and also no IPv4 Address (seen on ROCK Terminal with ifconfig)
  • UDM Pro Multicast DNS (on/off) as stated in the post before
  • UDM Pro IGMP Snooping (on/off) as stated in the post before
  • UDM Pro DHCP Snooping (on/off)
  • UDM Pro Flow Control (on/off)
  • assigning a static IP Address on Nuc and fixed IP Address in UDM Pro (ip address: xxx.xxx.xxx.254, netmask 255.255.255.0, gateway: xxx.xxx.xxx.1)
    • Tried UDM pro DNS Server (dns server xxx.xxx.xxx.1)
    • Tried Google DNS Server (dns server: 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4)
  • updating nuc8v5pnb bios and freshly install ROCK incl. codecs
  • resetting network on ROCK Terminal to reset existing ip configs to factory default

Do you have any more ideas?

br Ralf

You could load Linux on the PC, so you could run diags from the machine side to get a better picture of what might be occurring.

Sounds like a dodgy network interface. To rule it out get a usb to Ethernet dongle and plug it in and see if that works.

I think @Simon_Arnold3 has probably hit the nail on the head. Other than a faulty NIC, I can’t imagine why IPv4 wouldn’t be working.

There is no IPv6 DHCP on Roon OS, it relies on SLAAC/RA. It’s very rare to have DHCPv6 in the home.

IPv4 uses DHCP. My guess would be to look at your DHCP settings. Disable DHCPv6 because nothing on your LAN uses it… Maybe it is interfering with DHCPv4.

Hi @Ralf_W_Schlosser,

Looking through the UDM forums themselves, there were rumors several years ago of firmware updates suddenly causing the DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) feature to disrupt DHCP under certain circumstances. It’s unlikely the issue persists on the current firmware, but I’d try toggling on/off the DPI before a router restart.

I’d additionally check for any settings similar to “Block LAN to WAN Multicast and Broadcast data” in the security setup for the Unifi router.

Secondly, you mentioned DT as your internet provider - did they provide you with a modem in this setup, and is it perhaps still active as a router?

We’ll keep a look out for your response. Thanks!

Hi Connor, sorry for being quiet a time but we identified the problem: it was a hardware issue with the LAN port at the PrimeMini; we have set up Linux Ubuntu and reinstalled Roon and now all is working.
Thanks everyone who has helped and given support.
Ralf
