Now Playing Some Jazz [2021-2022]

Subscribed! Thank you!

Evening! Time to post another great album I love! Sorry again. Not in Qobuz. Don´t know on Tidal. Spotify yes. That´s the reason why I also keep my spotify account. The spotify library is much bigger than qobuz or tidal. Got this akira´s on CD time ago.

Originally released in 1975, Back To Rhythm is one of the crowning glories of Akira Ishikawa’s glittering career. The Japanese drummer turned his hand to countless wonderful records over his career, but this one was surely one of the best. Mr Bongo seem to think so, and they’re giving it a proper reissue treatment. There are funk breaks galore embedded in this joyously upbeat, irresistibly groovy sound, where the horns parp with clarity and the guitar licks cartwheel through airy mixes. Managing to be both fulsome and loud without coming over too heavy, Ishikawa’s sprightly take on instrumental funk has never sounded better than on this release.

PERSONNEL:

  • Akira Ishikawa - drums, vocals, african percussion
  • Masaoki Terakawa - bass
  • Kiyoshi Sugimoto, Takao Naoi, Tsunehide Matsuki - guitar
  • Hiromasa Suzuki - synthetizer
  • Takeru Muraoka, Masao Suzuki - saxophone
  • Eiji Arai - trombone
  • Koji Hatori - trumpet
  • Larry Sunaga - percussion

Recorded January 13, 15, 16 and 20, 1975

Any Thomas Chapin fans out there?

One of his best, which makes this album really excellent because Chapin never made a bad recording. Available on Tidal and Qobuz

Very musical later Sam Rivers that could be seen as underrated.

This is towards the end of Mingus’s career but it’s a great set split into two pieces. It’s on both Tidal and Qobuz with remasters!

The title track is one of my audio gear test tracks and has been for many years. Qobuz has a high resolution version available (24bit/192kHz) which sounds fantastic!
