Now Playing Some Jazz [2021-2022]

How about the famous Jamey Aebersold series?

I couldn’t agree more!

Good morning Ralph. Any particular favorites?

Favorites? Only about a hundred or so

However here’s one that I now have in 3 different formats: the original double LP on hat Hut Records, the CD on Hatology (which is slightly abridged) and the unabridged Qobuz version (also available on Tidal). And of course three completely different album covers. Recorded in Willisau, Switzerland on February 24, 1980

On Amazon Prime video, ‘Sun Ra - a Joyful Noise’. Probably only for the most dedicated of Sun Ra fans.

Thanks for reminding us what a great recording this is. Was fortunate enough to see Sun Ra six times during the late 70s/early 80s. Live recordings was where they really were burning the brightest. Listening to Sunrise… Raucous genius.

Could this amazing album (available in super high resolution on both Tidal and Qobuz) be considered the “Kind of Blue” for free jazz?

And speaking of Kind of Blue. What is everyone’s take on this release:

By the way Roon originally had this album as a duplicate of “Kind of Blue” and I had to do some fiddling to get Roon to display it correctly.

Bet you don’t have this.

Now this is a bumper sticker.

A five CD collection I borrowed from my local library. A fairly decent survey of jazz singing through the years.

Until I can find “The Bridge” on vinyl, these will do nicely -

Good luck with your search. Just make sure to get an original analog copy. These days too many vinyl reissues are made from digital masters, to which I say what’s the point of get vinyl if it’s made from a digital master?

Here’s another candidate for the KoB of free jazz.

Perhaps we are both a little mistaken and this is the real KoB of free jazz. After all Coltrane appears on both recordings. It should be noted that apperantly most US jazz radio station have a giant sign in their studio which reads:

Never, under any circumstances, play “A Love Supreme”, play Kind of Blue instead

Most will have there own favorite post-Love Supreme recording. For me, Ascension is the one. All-star players in or close to their prime.

Hi. What about this? I also love this One! Good musicians in it as well! A supreme Lee Morgan!
