NUC ROCK playback issue: slow and distorted music after initial play testing (ref#TT4CNQ)

What’s happening?

Initial play testing worked well. The next day when playing the music was slow and distorted. Rebooting the NUC ROCK fixed the playback, but the next listening session had the same result as the previous session.

Forgot to list my setup. It’s really simple.

Intel NUC11PAHi7 as my ROCK
ONKYO TX NR6100 AVR
Samsung Q80T 50 QLED TV

I have the NUC connected to the AVR via HDMI cable. NUC is also connected to network by Ethernet cable via a WiFi extender. I built the NUC kit a few days ago and tested it Monday night. The following day when I got home from work I experienced the slow music. Sounded like weird ambient noise music.

I don’t know if this would be the cause of the problem, but when I was assembling the NUC I couldn’t get the BIOS update. It was no longer on Intel’s website. I inquired on an Intel NUC subreddit and they said to check Asus’s site, but their NUC 11 BIOS failed to install.

Hi @Peter_Rodriguez,

Thank you for the post and we’re sorry it’s taken us some time to reach you.

Can you please share a screenshot of the Signal Path in Roon (illuminated dot next to the playback bar) when you encounter this distortion?

Do you have any digital signal processing engaged in Muse when this occurs? What is the sample rate of the track playing when you hear the distortion?

Does this still occur if you play back a track at a different sample rate?

The slowed effect you’re describing most often results from a driver playing back a track at a different sample rate than expected.

I’d verify that there aren’t issues with the codecs on this NUC as a result of the BIOS update issues.

Here is a screenshot of the signal path I got while playing a track. I haven’t messed with any playback settings so everything will be default. I will have to check back later tonight to look into the sample rate. How can I check for that?

As for the BIOS update. It looks like Intel no longer has updates for this model on their site as they are no longer developing NUC. I was pointed Asus and they had a BIOS update for my model, but the update failed. Here’s a pic of the screen.

Hi @Peter_Rodriguez,

Thank you for your ongoing patience. Does this issue occur with the same track or album each time, or does a certain file format seem to trigger it? For instance, the source file in your screenshot above is a 44.1kHz ALAC file. Do other file types cause this as well?

If you’re still encountering this behavior intermittently, we’d like to investigate more closely by pulling a diagnostic log set from RAATServer. At your convenience, please let us know the approximate date/time you last encountered the symptom during playback.

Thank you for getting back to me on this. Lately I’ve just been streaming music to my receiver instead of trying to use the wired connection. I tested it again today and just like before it was doing the same. This is on different tracks from different albums that span publishings from the 90s to present. All my file formats thus far are the same. I’m starting with CDs that I’m freshly ripping using Apple Music. I’m sure there are better ways to do that, but since it’s my wife’s Mac that she uses for work she doesn’t want me installing too many “weird” programs.

Hi @Peter_Rodriguez,

I wanted to check in to see if you were still having issues on the latest Roon release?

Yes, this problem still persists. Streaming through the built-in Chromecast works fine, but direct connection gives the distorted sound still.

Hi @Peter_Rodriguez,

Thanks for the update!

I was curious to know if you were able to get a BIOS update completed since posting this follow up? If not, this may be the best next step to attempt.

Let me know!

I have not made an attempt since the last time I posted trying. I’ll give it another go, but thus far it’s working fine with Chromecast.
