Description of Issue

While importing FLAC files to the internal drive from the NAS the process has crashed at least five times for ā€œunknown reasonsā€. Iā€™m importing small batches at a time. Iā€™m using the SMB link method on my 2023 M2 MacMini which is hard wired to the network. From Finder I have to go to Network > NucleusOne > and get back to the folder in internal storage and then start copying and pasting files again. When the process fails it just leaves empty folders which I delete and redo the copy and paste procedure. Just wondering why this is happening.

Hey @Stephen_Caputo,

Thanks for taking the time to write in and share your report!

Weā€™re not seeing a Nucleus One tied to your account currently, which is odd - typically weā€™d enable diagnostics to take a closer look at what might be causing the failure. If you could, please use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader?

From there, we should be able to pinpoint the underlying cause giving you issues.

While this likely wonā€™t have an effect on the process, could you also test out temporarily bypassing the switch and seeing if the same crashing occurs?

Weā€™ll be monitoring for your reply. Thanks! :raised_hands:

Hi, thank you for the reply. To get the logs of the Nucleus server using the instructions Iā€™m unsure of what do do after opening Finder to navigate to the smb://NUCLEUS/Data

  1. Using a Mac, open Finder and navigate to smb://NUCLEUS/Data and use Guest as the username and password. You should then see the RoonServer folder.

Also, when the process crashes I sometimes have a hard time reconnecting to the server in Finder, I get the attached message:

Update: The Nucleus One randomly drops offline while Iā€™m copying files to the internal drive. I can see that the paste process just stops, itā€™s stuck, and then I get a variety of disconnect error messages, and Iā€™ve noticed when it happens the Roon Server is not running, (please see attached screenshots). Iā€™ve had to hard power cycle the Nucleus One a couple of times to get it to show up in Finder again so I can reconnect and the connect process takes several minutes. This is not what I would expect to be normal operation. The Nucleus is named ā€œnucleusoneā€.

Per the previous feedback instructions for signing in as a Guest I initially input guest for both the user name and password but instead of entering that in the ā€œRegistered Userā€ fields I have selected the ā€œGuestā€ option without having to put in a password and the import process seems to work better, pastes were faster, etc but I was still getting disconnects. I did also try unmanaged Netgear switches, issue persisted so is probably not network related

Iā€™m also still having issues opening the Roon app after replacing my NAS as the server with the Nucleus One. The ā€œwaiting for Roon Serverā€ message persists when opening Roon and then the search for a Roon Server comes up with my MacMini as an option to connect instead of the Nucleus and then finally the Nucleus shows up and then never does connect. Just disconnected while Iā€™m typing this email.

.

UPDATE: I was able to get all my music files transferred to the internal drive. Roon shows 93,657 tracks. Roon is loading without the waiting for the server messages at the moment and audio is playing normal. I would still like to know if anyone has any thoughts about why I was having so much trouble keeping the Nucleus online last night. Thank you.

I was able to upload my logs from the Nucleus One. Please let me know if you can access them. Thank you.

Hey @Stephen_Caputo,

Thanks for the updates and for your patience so far!

We took a look at the logs youā€™ve sent over, and didnā€™t see any direct errors in relation to your issues. That said, if you could also upload your Varlog which should be included in your logs folder from the Nucleus, that typically highlights any hardware-related issues.

Outside of that, weā€™re happy to hear itā€™s been smooth sailing for you recently! :raised_hands:

Iā€™m not seeing the VarLog, could you point me to where I would find it?

Hi @Stephen_Caputo,
It should be in the log folder of your Nucleus. If you are having trouble locating it can you share a screenshot of the contents of your log folder?

Hey @Stephen_Caputo,

You can ignore the varlog request! A good next step in this case would be to access the webUI again, and reinstall RoonOS.

Let me know if this helps - thank you!

Thanks, I reinstalled the Roon OS today (Sunday 2/23). FYI, yesterday when I fired up Roon on my MBP laptop there was an app update available so I pushed the update and it was having trouble, I was getting the ā€œwaiting for Roon Serverā€ message and Roon never loaded. Had to restart the laptop and then opened Roon again and it found the server and I installed the update. The waiting for Roon Server issue is the same as when I was running the core on my NAS drive.

So far after reinstalling the Roon OS all three of my devices have loaded Roon quickly with the exception of my 2014 MBP - canā€™t update the OS past Big Sur 11.7.10, the MBP flashed the waiting for server message briefly then Roon loaded. My other devices are a 2023 MacMini M2 Pro running Sequoia 15.3.1 and an iPhone 14 PRO MAX running iOS 17.6.1. Iā€™ll keep you posted on how the Nucleus One is performing moving forward.

Hey @Stephen_Caputo,

Since a few days have passed, we wanted to check in and see how your Nucleus is performing?

Based on your admin, it looks like your MBP is running the current version of Roon, are you still having issues there?

There also still appears to be a version of Roon Server running on your Mac Mini, which is on the previous version of Roon. If you no longer need Roon Server on the Mac Mini, you can delete the Roon Server folder from your Library folder within the ā€˜Goā€™ dropdown (and hold the alt/option key.)

Let us know! :+1:

So just delete this entire Roon Server folder from the MacMini? Not understanding when to press and hold the alt/option key.

Hey @Stephen_Caputo,

Sorry for any confusion! You donā€™t have to necessarily delete your Roon Server folder - in the case that you ever want to or need to run Roon Server on the Mac Mini again. You can simply rename the Roon Server folder to ā€œRoonServer_Oldā€ and thatā€™ll do the trick as well.

Outside of this, how are things running for you? Are you still experiencing crashing?

Ok thanks, I thought you might have been concerned that having the other Roon Server folder on the MacMini might have been causing a conflict.

As per my follow up with you on the 23rd (and after reinstalling the Roon OS) as I described, MacMini and iPhone load instantly, the MBP is a little slower with a brief display of the ā€œwaiting for serverā€ but it loads Roon after a couple of seconds (itā€™s an old a** 2014 MBP so weā€™ll cut it some slack! :slightly_smiling_face:). Working well at this point. Music sounds great from the internal SSD I put in. Iā€™ll let you know if anything pops up. Thanks for the help.
