Nucleus One not recognizing music files, backups, and playlists (ref#A5CD4T)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· Music won’t play or issues with my library

Music won’t play or issues with my library

· Local files won't import or appear

Tell us what's going on

· Let me try again. I accidentally hit the wrong key and my draft inquiry disappeared.
I just received and installed my brand new Nucleus One. There are three major problems with it.
By way of background, I was using a Mac mini for my Roon Server. I had two SSDs attached to that Mac mini. One held my music files. The second one I designated for Roon backups. I attached both of these drives to the Nucleus One.
1. The Nucleus One did not recognized all my music files from the SSD. The files not recognized were in AIFF and FLAC formats. Nothing weird about either of those formats.
2. All my playlists disappeared. That's years' worth of work that I'm very sorry to see go "poof," without warning.
3. The Nucleus One software does not recognize the SSD that held my backups. The SSD is attached to the Nucleus One, and a light on the SSD shows it is receiving power, but the Nucleus One program does not recognize it. I thought I could use that disk to find my play lists. But that is impossible unless the Nucleus One recognizes the disk.

· The router is Arris. The Nucleus One is connected by ethernet cable to it. There is no VPN on the network.

Hey @Michael_Davis,

Thanks for taking the time to write in and share your report! I’m confident we can likely get all your issues sorted out with your new Nucleus and get you back to enjoying your music.

First, if you haven’t yet, I’d give our Roon Server migration guide a read - it offers some additional tips for success when moving Roon Server from different machines:

Do you by chance know how the SSD is formatted?

We’re not seeing your Nucleus tied to your account, if you could, can you please use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader? Once logs have been uploaded, please let us know so that we can check the server for your files, thanks!

Before writing the first tech help request, I did not read the article about setting up the Nucleus One with a transferred music library. My bad. But now I’ve followed the article and still have a problem.

I took the following steps.

    1. Shut down and disconnected Roon Nucleus.
    1. Ran Roon again on my Mac mini. Created a new folder for Roon backup on my Samsung T7 Shield with 4TB formatted as ExFAT. Backed up my music library to the new folder. That SSD also held all my music files.
    1. Shut down Roon on Mac mini. Had Mac disconnect the T7 Shield.
    1. Plugged in the T7 Shield in the USB input of the Roon Nucleus. Turned on the Roon Nucleus. Started Roon on my Macbook Pro.
    1. It immediately went into sign in screen. No option to recover backup.
    1. Roon started and showed the Roon Nucleus was my Roon server.
    1. But now the Roon Nucleus will does not show the T7 under storage or under backups. It does not show it after trying Brouse.
    1. Previously to this exercise, the Nucleus One recognized this same T7 SSD and would allow it be file storage. Now that it has the backup folder on it, as well as the music files, The Nucleus One does not see it at all.
    1. HELP (again)

PS: I searched my Mac for Log folders and found so many that I have no idea what to send you. If you need them, please provide directions for someone like me who is not a techie.

Update:

By copying files to and from various SSDs and HHDs, I now have one SSD and one HHD recognized by my Nucleus One. One drive contains the most up-to-date backup of my music files from my Mac mini. The other external drive contains all the music files that I played when my Mac mini was my Roon music server.

I see where I can “restore” my backup file. But I’d like confirmation that’s what I should do to have all my prior music files and playlists working on my new Nucleus One.

Hi @Michael_Davis,

We sincerely apologize for the delayed response. Let’s pick up from your unanswered question from two posts above.

This sounds like the Nucleus One just failed to mount the USB drive properly, possibly because it was not fully ejected by MacOS after you disconnected. If you’re still having this issue with a USB storage drive on the Nucleus One, try these steps:

  • Reconnect the drive to the Mac and make sure it mounts normally.
  • Fully eject it in macOS (Finder → Eject) to ensure it’s cleanly unmounted.
  • If available, temporarily connect it to a Windows PC and run a chkdsk scan to correct any filesystem issues (this often resolves cases where Linux-based systems won’t mount the volume).
  • After that, reconnect the drive directly to the Nucleus One and reboot the unit.
As for your more immediate question, restoring a Backup on the Nucleus One is the correct next step. Here are specific guidelines you can follow:
  1. Instead of logging in, click "Restore A Backup" in the lower-left hand corner

  1. Use Roon's file browser to locate the RoonBackups folder you created in Step 1
From there, you can pick up in the Storage section of this guide for specific instructions on how to add your library back to Roon from the new storage location. You’ll need to add Watched Folders in Settings → Storage to point Roon to the location where you’ve most recently stored your music.

Please reach out if we can clarify anything or assist further.

Problem solved. When I copied files to different drives, the Nucleus One recognized them. Then I could restore a backup and get all my files and playlists. Yahoo.
