· The Nucleus boots up and I can connect to it in the Roon app without issue, but I have a question about configuration/storage/attached devices

Describe the issue

I recently got the nucleus one and installed an internal hard drive. It is hardwired to my network via ethernet. Formatted the drive then sought to copy music from my MacBook to the nucleus one. I followed the backup instructions, backing up to an external ssd drive connected by USB to the nucleus. Then I did the "restore from backup." I got the message that it had successfully copied the files. But the nucleus does not recognize the files. It shows O artists, 0 albums. I tried a restore from the ssd again, and then album and artists showed up but they did not play. I have a screenshot of the storage devices, including the ones I disabled on the MacBook.

It looks as though you haven’t actually copied any music to your internal storage, since it says “Watching for new files in real time” without giving any indication of the total number of imported files.

The backup and restore functions are for the Roon Database content only - not for local music files.

Did you follow the instructions for using the SMB Connection method in this article to copy your files across?

Hi @Sam_Fromartz,
Welcome to the Roon Community. Thanks for reaching out to us about this issue. I see the same thing as @Geoff_Coupe. Can you give more details about how you tried to copy over the music?

Additionally it looks like you migrated your Roon server from a MacBook to the Nucleus. But I don’t think it worked correctly. Did you follow this article?

Why does it say disabled?

Because that’s part of the import process in the article referred to by @daniel

Internal Storage

If you’re moving your library to the internal storage of Nucleus there are some additional steps that need to be taken to ensure that you library properly migrates with all edits in place. If you need help formatting your internal storage, please see our guide on the subject.

  1. Go to Settings > Storage and disable all current watched folders except Internal Storage. To do this, select the 3 dots next to the storage location and then choose Disable.

  2. Access the Web Administration Interface and stop the Roon Server Software.

  3. Copy your files to the internal storage of Nucleus.

  4. Once the transfer is complete, return to the Web Administration Interface and restart the Roon Server Software.

  5. Roon will go through the process of identifying the files from your Internal Storage and match them to your existing Roon library.

I copied the database onto a USB and then following the article you linked too, I did import it. But as @Geoff_Coupe mentioned above, I didn’t realize that copying the files was a separate step.

I have now copied the files in the Roon Music Folder into the Internal Storage on Nucleus and it worked. As to the disabled folders on my MacBook, they no longer show up in Storage.

However, when Roon was running on my Mac, it also recognized many albums I have in Music (Apple). Now I assume I have to copy those files as well into the Roon Music Folder on Nucleus as well?

And is there anything else I should do?

Here’s a picture of storage now.

Hi @Sam_Fromartz,

Now that your Roon database is hosted on a separate machine, it’s correct that content stored in the Apple Music folder on your Mac won’t automatically add to Roon. You’ll need to either:

  1. Export an .XML of your Apple Music library in Apple Music (export options) and add it to the location hosting the rest of your local Roon library (internal storage in this case). See here:

or

  1. A slightly more complicated option would be to create a network share folder on your Mac that is watched by the Nucleus. See here:

I exported a Library.XML file of my Apple Music library in Apple Music and did this:

However, CDs that I own are not being recognized. I rescanned the storage multiple times but they’re still not showing up. Would this have to do with Apple DRM (even though it is CDs I own and burned and uploaded into iTunes [precursor to Music]? They play fine in Apple Music but don’t show up in Roon despite added the Library.XML file to Roon internal storage.
