Description of Issue
My Nucleus Plus is no longer detectable on the network within the usual band of my router 192.168.0.1 < - > 0.256. The unit is not detectable either direct from the device table on the router, or by using software such as Fing or Net Analyser.

This has been an intermittent and reoccurring issue with this unit during my ownership over the last 12 months, but Iā€™ve previously managed to resolve this by connecting the Nucleus direct to the router and re-booting everything in sequence. Unfortunately, in this instance this has not worked over the last 4 days of attempts. I have also tried connecting via http://nucleus, http://nucleus.local etc.

The unit physically appears to be functioning as normal. Power button lights up, and the lights on LAN port show display some network connectivity. However, neither of the HDMI ports provide a visual display so I have been unable to try the ā€˜resetnetworkā€™ command process.

The previous, last known IP address was at 192.168.0.150 and it was static. Amongst the many dozens of attempts at rebooting the Nucleus over the last couple days, the unit briefly appeared on the network as 192.168.0.57 and was briefly reachable via web browser, but then it disappeared again. This occurred following the removal of the DIMM and M2 boards and then reseating them. Subsequent attempts using this approach have failed.

The last remaining option before considering the unit ā€˜completely brickedā€™ that I can see is to install ROCK on the Nucleus and then seek support from Roon to remotely convert to the Nucleus OS.

Is this still an option ?

The option is not to install ROCK on the existing m.2 SSD, but to replace it and install ROCK on the replacement SSDā€¦

The symptoms you describe are most likely to be caused by a failing SSD. You say that there are no messages being shown on a monitor or TV attached to the HDMI connector of the Nucleus. One further check that you can do is to remove the SSD and then see whether messages show up (probably saying that there is no boot device). That would confirm that the issue is a failed SSD.

Thanks for the reply Geoff. Interestingly, Iā€™d arrived at a similar conclusion last night.

When I removed the M.2 ssd I donā€™t get a message of no boot drive or similar message, but I do get a simple black screen with ā€˜Roonā€™ with two small boxes in the upper right hand corner named ā€˜setupā€™ and ā€˜biosā€™. Unfortunately this screen only remains viewable for 2 or 3 seconds and then disappears.

Iā€™ll try today to source a new M.2 drive

Cheers

What you saw on the screen confirms that the SSD has failed.

Note that youā€™ll need a USB drive for this process that you can connect to a computer, and then the Nucleus.

The first thing youā€™ll want to do is purchase a new SSD. Personally I would choose a Samsung 250GB m.2 SSD.

And here is a short video on how to replace the SSD on your device: Nucleus SSD replacement.mp4

After that, youā€™ll need to format the SSD. Thereā€™s a good help article you can find here for next steps. Start from step #3 :

Essentially, youā€™ll be flashing the ROCK OS to a USB drive, and using it to boot and format the new SSD in your Nucleus.

Once youā€™ve successfully flashed ROCK onto the new SSD, keep your Nucleus online and let the support team know by paging them here in this thread (using @support in your post). From there, they can update you to the Nucleus OS on their end.

Post any questions you have here in the meantime.

Too late about the Samsung - Iā€™d managed to find the identical Kingston 250gb SSD and ordered it - It should arrive in the post in a couple of days. Iā€™ve created USB installer with Etcher, so already to go

Hi @Graeme_Newell ,

Thanks for reaching out, I agree that this is most likely a failing SSD. Once you have ROCK up and running you can fill out the below form and that will get you to the right queue for review:

Well, Iā€™m not having a lot of luck here.

I finally managed to get a Samsung SSD (970 Evo Plus 250gb) and I have installed it ( the Kingston SSD never arrived).

Following the ROCK install instructions I have the image flashed onto the USB stick, and I have a keyboard and monitor attached. However, when I power on the Nucleus I fail to get anything on the screen, not even a flicker. I checked the screen with another source and itā€™s fully functional.

Itā€™s looking more like itā€™s primary NUC board to me, but Iā€™m interested in your thoughts and how I might be able to test this out.

Thanks

Hey @Graeme_Newell,

If nothing is showing up via HDMI to your monitor, that could certainly be the case. The only way to confirm this would be to send in the device for our RMA team to diagnose. You can fill out the RMA form via the same typeform and options you accessed above.

Could you try out a different cable/port/monitor?

I have tried multiple hdmi cables, hdmi ports on monitor and Nucleus. I even reimaged USB using Etcher thinking that might have been corrupted. Iā€™ve filled out the RMA, letā€™s see what happens
