Onkyo TX-8390 Receiver

Hi All,
Wondering if anyone has the Onkyo TX-8390 for using Roon.
I currently have the Onkyo TX 8270 with a pair of magnepan .7 speakers and for the source a PC connected via USB to a Project S2 dac.
I tried a little experiment using roon and streaming direct to the 8270 via the onboard Google Chromecast and it blew me away, easily surpassing the PC connected to the Project S2 Dac. Even DSD being downsampled to 48khz in the 8270 was better, a much more full bodied sound when compared to the same DSD song played on PC being converted to PCM 384khz. Now just to note that I was not using Roon on the PC but Kodi so i know there will be a difference there but it just got me think that I can confidently sell the project S2 and the 8270 and have a really powerful feature rich Onkyo 8390. My question is does anyone have any experience with the 8390 and being “Roon tested” should it play all Hi res files including DSD without down sampling?

The limit on playing Hi Res files is determined by a few things. First, by how you are transferring or connecting the device. Chromecast is limited. Nothing you can do to change that.

You might be able to connect your PC directly to the Onkyo via HDMI and get higher resolutions.

Thanks for your response, I will be using a Roon core and streaming roon over Ethernet so I hope that it doesn’t go through the on board Chromecast like it does with the 8270, I would really like to confirm this before I buy one, the 8270 is a giant killer amp and runs the Magnepans with ease so the more power 8390 should be awesome.

It will only do chromecast, I think. If a device is using the actual Roon code, it will be designated Roon Ready, not Roon Tested.

Still confused as even on this site it says Roon Tested is the same as Roon ready and while my Onkyo 8270 works with Roon through the google cast system it is not Roon Tested where the 8390 is Roon tested.

On second reading of ready of tested vs ready I think you are right, Roon will go through the google cast rubbish, very frustrating as why would these products state that they are DSD compatible but the road block is their own streaming platform.

Just feed it with an external dac! I love my older thx onkyo receiver bridgeable amp but not its dac so use the oppo 205 for Usb audio in pure mode so no onkyo dsp or dac but native dsd via hdmi for sacds…sounds great c the Vandys. Definitely would be nice to see more high end home theater receiver’s that are actually roon ready.
D

That won’t work unfortunately as my DAC is not a streamer and my sacds are converted to dsf files stores on a nas, was hoping the Onkyo 8930 to be a one box solution
