Hi all, I have an original Linn Majik streamer from 2008. It works really well with Roon and sounds fairly good, but I can’t help wondering if a newer streamer would give me an improvement in sound quality?
Has anyone upgraded to a newer non Linn streamer? Any recommendations? Money is tight at the moment so I’d be looking at under $2,000. I’ve been looking at the likes of Bluesound, Cambridge Audio and Eversolo.
I should mention, I also have a WiiM Pro Plus which has fantastic functionality but I find the sound harsh and tiring.
Many thanks!
It looks like you have the Linn Majik DSM/3 Network Player. You could get a Majik DSM/4 or DSM/5, but the Majik DSM/4 would cost more than $2000 even if you traded your Majik DSM/3 for the Majik DSM/4 I believe. The Majik DSM 5 current model is $5590. Your Majik DSM/3 is not Roon Ready like the Majik DSM/4 or DSM/5, FYI. IMO if you don’t need to be Roon Ready, I would stay with the unit you have for now with the budget you have.
Thank you so much for your reply vomdmdiv.
No, the Linn Majik DSM/3 is from 2016 - mine is the very first Linn streamer from 2008! It still shows up as Roon Ready.
I actually ended up getting an Eversolo DMP-A6. It had every function I need and sounds excellent - it does sound noticeably better than my 17-year-old Linn.
Thanks again
Get along to your local Linn dealer and enquire about upgrade options .
I’ve had an Akurate DS/Katalyst for 12 years and recently upgraded to a Klimax DS/3/Organik/ Utopik.
The recent Selekt streamers are another interesting option.
Just my tuppence worth , but enjoy the music!.
Nice advice. I initially purchased the Linn Original Selekt DSM (2018) with a Katalyst DAC module. Since then, I upgraded the unit with a Utopik Power Supply and Organik DAC. I also have a Chord Hugo 2 - which sounds quite good - and I would say that my Linn Majik DSM 4 (Katalyst based DAC) sounds better, at least in my opinion.
I upgraded the Klimax DS/3/Katalyst …saved a few bob on the NGDSM .
We had a house extension done last year so finances were too tight to spend £35,000 on a new Linn streamer …
