Describe the issue

Roon Server is running on a Mac mini (late 2014; MacOS Monterey 12.7.8). Mac is connected to an ethernet switch. Playback dropouts occur directly from system output (usb from Mac to DAC) and also if playing to RPi Roon bridge connected via ethernet to same switch that Mac is connected to.

I can consistently cause a playback dropout by opening a browser window on the Mac mini and going to a speedtest site. I suspect this may be a network issue, but system output via USB is perfectly stable using Apple Music to the DAC. I should also note that while dropouts happen with local audio files and Qobuz streaming, I think it happens slightly more often with streaming. I appreciate any suggestions!

Describe your network setup

Modem is ATT BGW320-500 fiber w/ wifi disabled. Switch is connected to modem and is a TP-Link TL-SG105. Mac server and RPi endpoint are connected to switch with ethernet. Also connected to switch ethernet is Google Nest Wifi router.

Hi @Duncan_Duncan ,

Thanks for reaching out. I’ve activated diagnostics for your account and what this action does is upload a set of logs to our server for review. Looking over the dropouts, I can see that you get a dropout and your iPad + localhost zone drops right around the same time, suggesting this is a more widespread network hiccup.

Just to clarify here, the switch is the first hop after the modem? Your router should ideally be the first hop after the modem, and then the router output should be connected to the switch to service the remaining network clients.

My mistake, yes, the modem is connected to the Google Nest router, and then output to the switch.

Hey @Duncan_Duncan,

Thanks for the update! Are your devices disappearing at all as well?

If possible, are you able to temporarily bypass the switch and get your Mac/ Roon Server setup with a direct ethernet connection to your router?

It may also be worth reviewing your nest settings, and see if there’s an option to allocate network priority to your Mac as well.

Thank you! :raising_hands:

Thank you, I connected the Mac/Roon directly to the router, bypassing the switch and played system out (USB to DAC) and experienced a dropout at 9:18 am EST when I opened the browser and ran speedtest. Of course, this taxes the ethernet connection and one would say, “don’t run a speedtest when playing Roon,” but dropouts happen when not doing speedtest, as it did again at 9:22 am. I guess we know the switch isn’t the problem now.

I can allocate priority to the Mac/Roon Server, but Google nest only allows temporary allocation up to 4 hours, so this wouldn’t be a permanent fix.

Edit: yes, devices disappear momentarily

Thanks for your continued help!
