Playback dropouts

Hi @support .

Recently, over past few months I have been getting dropouts and stoppages while streaming through Tidal. When I hit play the music resumes. This is irregular but sometimes cronic and seems to coincide with the Roon 1.3 updates. I am now running 1.3 - 218 build and have Hi Res CD quality Tidal subscription (the errors have once or twice happened with local files but this is rare so I’m not sure this is related to same problem).

My system is Antipodes DXe music server direct to Aqua La Voce DAC using Roon core & Roon ready function of the DXe. This is controlled wirelessly by MacBook Pro laptop or iPhone. I have tried with USB direct to the DAC and USB through a Wavio USB to SPDIF converter - currently using Wavio board powered by Uptone LPS-1 as SQ is superb. I don’t use MQA files or DSP. My router is a Virgin Superhub 2 wired to the DXe and does not allow DNS server changes.

The problem goes in waves but currently a few dropouts per day at least. The worst was last weekend when I hit a playlist, it cycled through the whole list bouncing from one track to the next giving Tidal errors. I rebooted DXe and router. Had to reboot DXe 6-10 times before it would show up on network and connect to Tidal again. So now I’ve left the DXe on (as the worst problems are on rebooting/connecting) and dropouts are less frequently this week ( 1-2 per day). Here are a few Roon reports showing dropout errors and 502 Bad Gateway followed by a Router log sample:

Thanks for your help
Patrick

Hi @Patrick_Bryson ---- Thank you for the report and the feedback. In regard to this trace you are seeing in the log file:

04/14 14:20:28 Warn: Error in web request https://push.roonlabs.com/push/1/connect: NetworkError (The remote server returned an error: (502) Bad Gateway.)

This can be ignored as it isn’t related to the dropouts you are receiving, good catch though

Moving forward, our knowledge base contains good information on how to approaching troubleshooting audio dropouts and what can be causing them. May I kindly ask you to give the article a read and let me know what you have tried thus far?

Furthermore, can you please provide me with the following:

  1. Besides the Virgin Superhub 2 router is there any other networking hardware being utilized in your network configuration/topology? If there are additional pieces of networking equipment can you please verify what they are (make/model) and where they fall into the chain of communication.

  2. If you use the TIDAL application by itself do still notice the same behavior?

  3. In your troubleshooting of this behavior have you tried running Roon (temporarily of course) on a different device hosting your core? If so what was the experience like?

-Eric

Thanks Eric, I will check this out and get back to you.

I had several dropouts tonight which look like these:

Hi Eric,

I’ve looked into some of the things you pointed me to and now I’m looking into a possible software corruption on my music server which might be the cause of the problem. Will return here if that does not solve stoppages and dropouts.

Patrick

Hi Eric
Just supplying answers to your 3 questions as well to see if this supplies you any worthwhile info while I wait for my server to be diagnosed.

Regards Patrick

  1. I have a Devolo dlan 500 wifi power line network extension. This is running from the Super hub to provide internet to the back of my flat. This is not used for audio, just connected to hub. When I disconnected it, it didn’t seem to help the problem.

  2. I did not have a problem when running Tidal app, this was from my laptop.

  3. When running roon core on my laptop I did not have problems.

Thanks Patrick

Hi @Patrick_Bryson ---- Thank you for the follow up and taking the time to answer my questions!

The only thing that really jumped out at me was the power line adaptor as we have seen issues with these devices before but if you have already bypassed using that device and the issue persisted, I’d say we are ok there.

Please let me know what comes out of the server diagnosis as I am curious if anything turns up. I will be on the lookout for your feedback :sunglasses:

Thanks Eric, will do.
