Hi @Leslie_Zhou,
Thanks for reaching out to us about this issue. I think the next step here is to enable some diagnostics on your account so our technical staff can get some more insight into what’s going on here.

However, before I enable this feature, I’d like to ask for your help ensuring we gather the right information.

First, can you please reproduce the issue once more and note the time at which the error occurs. Then respond here with that time, and I’ll make sure we review the diagnostics related to that timestamp.

The issue occurred in the Beijing time zone on April 2, 2025, between 10:50 and 11:00.

Issue Description:
Roon Server
The Roon server uses an Intel 245k, z890m and Windows 11. After connecting via Windows Remote Desktop over a local network, I opened Roon Remote on the Roon server and enabled the System Output audio, but there is no sound during playback.

Other PC
Open Roon Remote on another pc within the same local network and enabling System Output audio, it continuously displays “Enabling…” in red text.

Hey @Leslie_Zhou,

Thanks for sharing the above info - from a fresh Roon Server diagnostic report, we can see the playback failures related to the system output of your Windows, showing:

[System Output] [raatclient] GOT [6] {"message":"RAAT__OUTPUT_PLUGIN_STATUS_FORMAT_NOT_SUPPORTED","status":"UnexpectedError"}

Can you review the device settings for your windows system output, and confirm you’re able to play the file formats of your local files?

With that, lets see if performing a RAATServer refresh may help for your issue PC:

You can generate a new RAATServer instance on your device by following these instructions, but please be aware that this will reset your Roon Settings → Audio Tab to factory settings and I would advise making a backup of any custom DSP settings you have:

  • Create a Backup of your current Roon database
  • Exit out of Roon
  • Navigate to your Roon’s Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “RAATServer”
  • Rename the “RAATServer” folder to “RAATServer_old”
  • Restart the Roon App to generate a new RAATServer folder

Roon Server
RAATserver folder renamed, but Roon remote app on the server still can not play music. (the test time is the same as the reply time)

Other PC (same lan with server)
Roon remote app is ok now. I don’t know why.

Hello @Leslie_Zhou ,

What do you have set to your System Output in the Windows Mixer? Is it to some kind of DAC, USB headphones, a 3.5mm output, etc? If you try the WASAPI driver in your screenshot, does that work as expected or does it still display an error?

I use windows remote desk to control Roon server’s windows system. in windows audio settings, the audio output is “Remote Audio” and there are no other audio output options. Roon server PC not connect any DAC or others. also tried wasapi output, still display error.

Hello @Leslie_Zhou ,

Can you clarify further what this Remote Audio zone is? Is it some kind of zone for a video call application? Are there any actual devices that should show up there? If the device does not work in Windows native mixer, it won’t work with Roon either, I would confirm if Youtube or some other sort of app works with the device.

I use the “Remote Desktop Connection” application on a computer (Win10) to connect to and operate the Win11 system of the Roon server, so the Win11 sound output of the Roon server is displayed as remote audio.
The problem is that when I use the Roon application on the server to play music via remote desktop, I get a playback error. but before, it was ok to play sound normally through remote desktop connection.

Hello @Leslie_Zhou,

Thank you for the clarification.

Could you please try using an alternative remote control application such as AnyDesk or TeamViewer instead of Remote Desktop Connection, and check if the playback issue persists when operating Roon through it?

This will help us determine whether the problem is specifically related to RDP’s handling of audio devices.

Kind regards,
Vadim
