Describe the issue

I have been using Roon since it first came out and have never had any serious issues. I just upgraded my Mesh wifi to Orbi 770 and changed my Xfinity service to 2.5G with a new Modem. Everything is working amazingly at that speed except Roon. I have tried rebooting everything and logging out of Tidal and Qobuz and resigning in, but it seems with Tidal, especially, If I play a playlist, it just stops for no reason. I can restart it, but this has never happened before. Any ideas?

Describe your network setup

Xfinity Modem Xfi 8, Orbi 770 wireless Network, Hard wired at 2.5 G to an Innuous Server out of Orbi, then connected directly to a Lumin X1 Streamer into a Meridian 857 Power amp. all good cables. I ave a complicated sound system, but all of it is down stream of my main system. The issue began when I changed my modem and wireless router , but the rest of the wifi works perfectly and is fast.

Let’s check whether local files play normally first.

Get a few FLAC files, put them in Roon server. Play from those local FLAC files only, turn on repeat.

Hello @Thomas_Bacon,

Thank you for reaching out to Roon support.

@wklie has already provided a great starting point for troubleshooting.

Additionally, I’ve reviewed the diagnostic data enabled on your account and observed multiple instances of audio dropouts. Most of these appear to be related to an unstable connection to Tidal’s services. As shown in the log excerpt below, during playback, the buffer level reached 51%, then suddenly dropped to 5%, after which dropouts began occurring.

In similar cases, we’ve seen users achieve more stable performance by changing their router’s DNS servers from the default ISP-provided ones to one of the following:

I will give that a try, but it does not seem to be a Lumin Issue. For example, I can play anything out of the Lumin app and there is never a cut out. I use both the T2 and the X1 in my Roon combination of end points. If I play anything out of Tidal, Quobuz, or Spotify in either streamer separately, everything plays perfectly. So, it seems it is some conflict that has appeared when I switched Modem and Wireless Router between Roon and something in the Network. all firmware is updated in Server and Roon and Network and Computer. Roon Core is on the Innuous Server.

I am not sure how to change the DNS settings but will try to find out. I am running a new IMac as well and all the firmware is updated on everything in my network. Will get back. Thanks

Hello @Thomas_Bacon,

Please let us know how it goes after the DNS change or if you need any additional guidelines.

I have looked at each DNS system and I have no idea how to proceed with any of them. Do you have any thoughts on how to do this. I do not want to change settings that I have no idea how to reverse so I need some instruction and none of the programs provide easy to follow installation and configuration that I can see. I also tried Peter 's suggestion and there was no cutouts by playing a local flac file and repeating. The cutouts are unpredictable.

Ok, I changed the DNS settings to Google DNS. I will let you know if it helps

ok, I changed the DNS settings to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 It just cut out on a Ray LaMontagne song you should be able to see in your logs.

Hello @Thomas_Bacon,

Thank you for the update.

I noticed that you’re currently playing to a group of devices. Could you please try playing to each device individually and let us know if the issue still occurs in that case?

This will help us narrow down whether the problem is related to a specific device or to grouped playback.

Vadim, Thank you for your quick response. It will take awhile to play each component separately for a number of songs . I can eliminate the X1 Streamer as I have never had the problem with it and I play it a lot separately. I am playing the T2 now and will work my way to the other two at some point today. Ironically since the Jason Maraz piece cut out, it has been doing fine. I also rebooted everything, after it cut out and after the DNS was changed…iPhone, Modem, Router, iMac. Innuous server, amplipi amp, anything connected with Roon. I have found sometimes there is a latency in a network when any changes are made and rebooting everything always seems to help. If I had to guess, I am usually playing a group of Roon Endpoints together when this issue occurs if that helps. Tom

Hi @Thomas_Bacon,
Thank you for the update on your testing of the individual audio zones. Once you’ve finished, let us know what you have found and we can proceed from there.

This was definitely a good step to take. Hopefully it permanently resolved this issue.

Well, Vadim, Everything appears to be ok. I played each end point separately for awhile, then gradually added them back in so I was playing the ones together where I had the issue. It now seems to be resolved for the moment. Let me play this for the next couple of days and I will report back. For the time being, I am going to leave the DNS setting as is with the 8888 and 8844. If it keeps working, I do not want to change anything. Thanks for your help, Tom

Sounds good @Thomas_Bacon - take as much time as you need, we’ll be monitoring for your reply and results!

Ok, the issue seems to be resolved. Thanks for so much for your help. I started out with a Roon cutout issue that was caused by an older Orbi Mesh Wifi system in my Network. I am pretty sure that was the main problem as it caused other issues. This started a chain of events that really was a pain but at this point my audio is the best it has been for sometime. Far too many moving pieces. Most of my complete house audio is wired, but a few of the endpoints are wireless. Just to put in your data base because with all the systems out there, I cannot figure out how you solve so many conflicts. I think changing the DNS was huge, but Networks can be complicated. It did not work at first, but I have found there is latency in any change. Since I upped my internet signal to over 2 G, I eventually upgraded my older 1G switches, checked cables to make sure they were at least 6A, etc. All that made a difference. I am not an IT guy, but I think opening up the Network to stop any constrictions in signal helped. So, New EXfinity Modem(Don"t get me started on those idiots) New Mesh Wifi, Faster Internet signal with more bandwidth, better switches, etc., I guess I was due for an update. What I cannot stress enough and this comes from an IT guy is that any hardware change you do to a Network, when you are done, Power off everything connected to the Network down, close all programs before you do this, Reboot everything and add in each piece one by one. It always seems to work. Tom Bacon

Hi @Thomas_Bacon ,

Thanks for the update and glad to hear that the issue is resolved with the various upgrades you’ve put in place! I hope you have a smooth Roon experience moving forward and many enjoyable listening sessions! :headphones:

Noris, I do still have one issue on my cell phone controller. I have not noticed it on my computer, but I keep getting error messages that Roon cannot connect to the Network which it obviously is. Should I uninstall it and reinstall?

On Apple devices and Mac computers, uninstall all VPN apps, disable Limit IP Address Tracking.

Make sure Roon Remote app has all permission it requires, especially Local Network.

On Roon Server computer, disable firewall and reboot it.
