Playback stops with 24-bit audio files in Roon on Mac-Mini M4 (ref#5KQ91Q)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· I am experiencing an issue when playing 24-bit audio files in Roon.

When I play 24-bit tracks, playback stops after approximately 30–60 seconds. In some cases, Roon automatically skips to the next track. In other cases, the track continues to play, but there is no audio output.

This issue does not occur consistently with lower bit-depth files.

Roon Server: Mac-Mini M4 with Tahoe 26.3
Roon Version: 2.58 (Build 1600)

Please let me know if you need any additional information, logs, or system details to help investigate this issue.

Time: 22.03 pm (Bangkok Time Zone) / Track - I.March - Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No.3 - Nobuyuki Tsujii

May I ask if there is any progress or update regarding this issue?

Hey @Thummarat_Prathomsur,

Thanks for writing in and for sharing your report!

As a first step, could you please head to Roon Settings > Services > Tidal > Edit and review your playback quality settings? Please double-check you have the highest option selected.

We’ll be on standby for your reply and results - thank you! :folded_hands:

At the moment, my TIDAL service is already set to the highest quality (MAX). However, the issue is still occurring consistently and has not been resolved.

I would appreciate it if you could help investigate this issue further and advise on how to resolve it.

Hey @Thummarat_Prathomsur,

Thanks for the update! From a fresh diagnostic report, we see the following errors that lead to playback stopping:

Warn: FTMSI-B-OE ti/DD273CEA: poor connection kbps:929.0 (min:5308.0)
Trace: [FiiO M11 Plus @ 192.168.1.61:41809] [raatclient] GOT [19] {"samples":65892,"status":"Dropout"}

And then:

Trace: [FiiO M11 Plus @ 192.168.1.61:41809] [raatclient] GOT [19] {"samples":115200,"status":"Dropout"}
Trace: [FiiO M11 Plus @ 192.168.1.61:41809] [raatclient] GOT [19] {"samples":86400,"status":"Dropout"}
Warn: [Fiio M23 Roon Ready] [zoneplayer/raat] Too many dropouts (>3s dropped out in the last 30s). Killing stream

And lastly:

Warn: [zone Fiio M23 Roon Ready] Track Stopped Due to Slow Media
Info: [audio/env] [zoneplayer -> stream] All streams were disposed

We see this same pattern happen across every instance of playback failing. With this, we’ll want to investigate your network further.

Do you have any additional network gear or managed switches in play here?

I would also expore any “QoS”, “Traffic Priority”, or per-device/port bandwidth control settings within your router itself - see if you’re able to allocate network priorty to your Roon Server machine.

We’ll be on standby for your reply and results, thank you! :raising_hands:

Thank you for your investigation and detailed analysis.

I have reconfigured my router settings based on your recommendations. At the moment, Roon appears to be working normally again without playback interruptions.

I would like to continue monitoring and testing the system for another 2–3 days to confirm stability. I’ll follow up with an update once the testing period is complete.

Sounds great @Thummarat_Prathomsur - certainly keep us posted on how things perform over the next few listening sessions! :musical_note::musical_keyboard:

I would like to update you that the issue has now been resolved after making the following configuration changes:

  1. Router setup
  2. Audio MIDI setup on Mac mini → Topping DX9
  • Format set to 2ch 24-bit
  1. Roon → Settings → Audio → DX9
  • Exclusive Mode: ON
  • DSD Playback Strategy: DSD over PCM (DoP)
  • Max Sample Rate: 192k
  • Resync Delay: 500–1000 ms
  • Buffer Size: Max

After applying these settings, playback is now stable and working normally.

Thank you very much for your support.
