Playing tracks on Sonos Era One produces no sound due to incorrect flac encoding (ref#5AOFRG)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· When I use Roon to play tracks from my server (Synology NAS 3018xs) and use a Sonos Era One as the audio device it shows as playing but no sound on the Sonos. If I open the Sonos app it shows a .flac file is trying to play but the encoding is not correct.

Tell us about your home network

· Synology DS3018xs - it has always worked with Roon before today. I have reinstalled the Roon app on the NAS and on my PC and iPhone but it is the same on both.

Sonos’ infamous “incorrect encoding” message can arise simply due to network problems, rather than an actual encoding problem.

There is no “Era One”. There’s an Era100 and a One. If it’s a One is it still running Sonos S1? S1 would limit it to 16-bit support.

Hi Giles. Thanks for the response. It is a Sonos Era 100 pair - just badly named by me! They are not using Sonos S1. Do you know of any network problems that could cause this? If I switch the Roon server to a folder on my PC it is fine and everything plays.

The exact same files on the PC, copied afresh from the NAS? If they’re okay it suggests a problem between the NAS and the Roon server, rather than anything specific to the Eras.

BTW the randomly named FLAC file appearing in the Sonos controller is normal. It’s just a container for the stream.

Hello @john4

Thank you for reaching out to Roon support.

I think the next step here is to enable some diagnostics on your account so our technical staff can get some more insight into what’s going on here.

However, before I enable this feature, I’d like to ask for your help ensuring we gather the right information.

First, can you please reproduce the issue once more and note the time at which the error occurs. Then respond here with that time, and I’ll make sure we review the diagnostics related to that timestamp.

I uninstalled the Roon app from the NAS and reinstalled it. All good now!
