Description of Issue

Does anyone have any ideas on how to achieve error-free playback on an Audiolab 8200CDQ when connected directly by USB to an Intel NUC running Rock?

I’m hearing brief stutters or pops every 20 seconds or so. I’ve tried multiple setting changes, including removing all DSP, loudness controls and resampling instructions without eliminating the problem. Have also experimented with various buffers sizes, and added a powered USB hub between the NUC and the DAC. Problem still there.

I’ve been using Roon for several months in this network setup without issues. And it continues to work without problem on two other devices connected via streamers.

All help greatly appreciated!

Try another USB cable; that has worked for others in the past.

Thanks Martin.
Have now tried three different USB cables, using various USB ports on the NUC. Unfortunately, the pops there with all of them.

Any other ideas out there?

Hi @DLC ,

Can you try to plug in the device to a Windows or Mac Roon Remote via USB and see if the issue still reproduces?

Hi Noris.
Playing via USB from a relatively old Thinkpad X230 running Roon Remote seems to eliminate the unwanted noises. Good shout.
I presume this means the issue lies with the NUC running Roon Rock. Do you think there is a way to resolve it without adding another computer or streamer into the chain?

Hi @DLC ,

Glad the suggestion helped! Have you tried to update the ROCK BIOS to the latest version? It almost sounds like the USB port is not properly isolated and there’s some noise from electrical interference. The simplest/cheapest solution would be to add a Rasberry Pi running DietPi/Ropieee and connect that to your Audiolab DAC via USB (provided the Audiolab supports Linux).

Thanks for the suggestion on the NUC’s BIOS. Will give it a go.
