Post-update Airplay devices delay in Roon Playback [Ticket In]

Hi @Robert_Masters,

Unfortunately, there aren’t any updates to share yet - progress is slower than expected as our team has yet to reproduce the issue in-house.

As mentioned before, as soon as we do have more information to share, we’ll post it here directly. If the thread closes before this occurs, we’ll manually re-open the thread and share updates.

You have my apologies here for the long wait. @Jeffrey_Pinhey I’d suggest opening your own technical support thread if you haven’t already - please fill out the technical support typeform in full :

Thank you :folded_hands:

Hi Benjamin. I will continue to live in hope. I hope that you guys can sort this asap. It’s not great having to pay (now three months) for a service which is not doing what I jumped on board for, namely multi-room playback. Cheers.

Hi @Robert_Masters,

If possible, can you reboot your Roon Server twice, and reproduce the issue? Our team has enabled additional logging that will help us better examine further underlying causes.

In addition to this - and you have my apologies if this has already been glazed over, but if you first connect your airplay devices to the system output of your mac (coreaudio, completely outside of Roon) and then head into Roon and select the system output as your zone in Roon, are you able to get playback going?

Thank you!

Just jumping in here. I noticed the same issue in the same time period. Airport Express has been working absolutely fine for years then boom, no audio with a delay of about 2 minutes before it plays, sometimes. If I send to a HomePod, no problem plays as you expect.

If I send a Deezer or Qobus stream direct to that AE endpoint, works as expected. I was lucky enough to have a work colleague lend me another one as I assumed it was a device fault, same behavior. This is on a wired connection via gigabit Ethernet network.

I’ve just been hoping for a fix in a newer release, but this feels like we have had a similar issue in the past if I remember correctly? Can’t quite recall. Happy to provide any further support as another data point for you and the tech team.

Hi Benjamin.

I have rebooted the SGC i9 Roon server twice. I connected various AirPlay devices via Apple Music on a Macbook. I then connected the Macbook to Roon via “Audio” - “Other Network Devices”. When the Macbook is selected, nothing plays with Roon. Most of the AirPlay zones do not work. A few of them do work. Very random.

I hope that I’m doing what you are asking. Let me know if I may assist further.

Mahalo, Robert

Thank you @Robert_Masters - we’ve captured the additional diagnostic reporting we were after, and have shared it with development.

We’ll follow up with additional information soon! Thanks again :raising_hands:

I have the same problem here with early gen airport. it takes 3-5 mins then music will play..

I hate to sound impatient, but this is getting beyond a cruel joke. A feature that used to work perfectly is still broken after five months. This is crazy! What is going on??? Do you not care about your customers???

Hi @Robert_Masters,

I’m so sorry for how long this issue has plagued your system! Our team has set up more verbose logging over in our Early Access branch of Roon that we’re hoping will give us the additional information we’re after.

If you could, please move your Roon Server and Roon remotes over to Early Access temporarily, and we’ll request a fresh diagnostic report. Here’s more info on how to migrate to Early Access:

Thank you, Robert - I realize how long-standing this issue has been for you, and our team is eager to find a fix. :raising_hands:

Hi Benjamin. OK, I will see what I can do. Playing around with my Small Green Computer is way above my pay grade, but I will try. Andrew at SGC set the unit up and I never touch it, not knowing anything about Linux OS. To confirm, is the SGC i9 a Linux device? Mahalo.

Hey @Robert_Masters,

Apologies for the delay! Moving builds on linux is a bit intensive, would you be open to considering temporarily running an early access version of Roon Server on the mac you typically only use as a remote?

That way you wouldn’t have to touch your SGC. Let me know your thoughts, thank you! :+1:

Aloha Benjamin. Excuse the delayed reply… I did not get an email alert. Yes, I believe that this may be a bit more doable on a Mac, which I do know my way around, Let me look into this over the next few days and will reply if/when I figure out how to do this for you. Mahalo, Robert.

Hi @Robert_Masters,

We have additional work proceeding through the pipeline that also touches Airplay and the class of errors you’re encountering with this Airport Express.

If you don’t wish to go through the process of migrating your RoonServer to test the current Early Access build now, we can instead notify you here as soon as we have an anticipated release date for the full suite of Airplay-adjacent fixes.

Hi Connor. Cheers for the update. Sure, if you guys are working on Airplay issues, I am happy to wait it out and not touch my Mac. Let me know how things go and I can test at my end - and if need be, we can also revisit me installing that software on the Mac. Mahalo and have a great weekend.

Hi @Robert_Masters ,

Thanks for letting us know you’d prefer to wait for the ticket to be solved. The ticket is making its way through the queue and when there are updates to share, we make note of this in our release notes and/or reach out on this thread. Thanks in advance for your patience as we work on this, mahalo :slightly_smiling_face:

hi there, i also meet with this bug somehow, can you help to include me into the early access build?

thanks

Hey @Zibei_Li,

You can access the Early Access build by following the steps here:

installed, thanks, but seems the playback delay bug still exists

So we are now at eight months in and still no solution. I have also tried reaching out to customer support about a credit, but no reply after several attempts. I’m still waiting for a reply. I don’t think that it’s fair for me to be paying full price for something that does not work properly. And I (and other Roon subscribers who use AirPlay) have been waiting for a fix for eight months! What is going on? I subscribe to Roon mainly for multi-room playback and AirPlay used to work fine. And now you can’t find a fix? How long do us AirPlay users have to wait to see any sort of solution (or for customer support to reply to my emails)? Thanks.
