Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital setup

Native DSD usually requires ASIO drivers that are mainly available for Windows. Under the tech page for that product, there are Windows drivers.

Roon asks the DAC what it can handle, it is being told 128 via DoP. Now, it may be a limitation with a Linux based OS, like Nucleus, OR, it could be limitation between the streamer and that DAC.

Since you are using both product from Pro-Ject, I’d send their tech support an email asking about using those two products, and how you can get native 256 DSD. Also, ask if it can get native DSD under Linux.

Thank you, will do. The streamer is Roon Ready, the DAC is Roon Tested, so hopefully they’ll be familiar with my use case.

Can you post a screenshot of the streamers audio output settings. Then it is easier for someone to spot what is wrong. The combination can definitely do native DSD512.

Have you a managed to get the two devices to play DSD512 with Roon? I’m going to try some experiments today to try to get it sorted.

Just plugged the Pro-Ject DAC Box S2+ directly into the Nucleus and it’s able to play DSD256 DoP. DSD512 DoP not possible as that exceeds the maximum PCM rate of the DAC for encapsulation. I’m not bothered about 512 though.

So it seems the issue is with the Pro-Ject Stream Box S2 Ultra, not the DAC or Roon. I wonder if the streamer won’t play DSD256 because I’m running it wireless? I’ve seen that some streamers eg. Lindemann Limetree Network restrict their maximum sample rates when going wireless.

It should also work with the stream box. I have streamed DSD512 but only DSD256 is officially supported.
But you definitely need to specify DSD Native. Not DOP.
It was discussed in this thread https://community.roonlabs.com/t/having-issues-with-new-pro-ject-stream-box-s2-ultra/71372

I don’t care whether it’s native DSD or DoP, it’s the same thing going through the D/A stage.

If I set it to Native DSD in the streamer, Roon converts to PCM before sending to the DAC. Set to DoP I get up to DSD128 via the stream box/DAC, but DSD256 via just the DAC. Which DAC are you using?

I would recommend that you post a screenshot of your S2 Streamer audio output settings here. Then it is easier to spot if you are missing something.

I’ll do that but the streamer’s settings get overrided by the streamer’s own ‘Roon Settings’ sub menu. As such, the streamer could be set to output DoP but the streamer’s Roon settings could be set to Native DSD. When using with Roon only the later has an effect.

Native DSD is not possible with the Pro-Ject DAC Box S2+ and Roon as far as I can ascertain. Via the streamer/DAC combo native DSD just gets turned into PCM, and via the direct Nucleus USB/DAC there is no menu option to change to native DSD.

Have you tried contacting Pro-Ject support and describe the situation they have have some advice/suggestions.

Also, I notice on your screen shots, you had DSD Playback Mode set to DSD Direct, yet below you had:

Yes, I’ve contacted Pro-Ject’s distributor in the UK who’ve emailed me back with some suggestions. They’ve now asked Pro-Ject to look into it.

There are two options in the streamer menus for DSD output setting. One is for the streamer when used with its own software, the other is for when using the streamer with a Roon. The streamer’s own settings don’t affect playback when using Roon, so it’s only the streamer’s Roon settings that matter.

Hello folks, can someone explain which settings will enable this?
I only get MQA or MQB with MQA content as long as I enable renderer or decoder or both, is this still possible with the actual core version?

Hi @dabassgoesboomboom I came across this old thread while snooping around. Do you recommend these settings in conjunction with Fast Rolloff, Distortion filter enabled on the DAC? Anything else I should be doing on that unit?

If you upsample to DSD256 or 512, the DACs filter settings are not in play. But yes good idea to enable those 2 things anyway
