Roon does things very differently than itunes. itunes just looks at basic information, Roon looks at folder, file tags, and other features to identify the song and then pulls the metadata not from your files but from data providers to create the rich and informative metadata it presents.
Usually in the case of compilations, the file tags are the issue. Take a look at one of the compilations and make sure that:
- That all the files are in a single folder
- That the files are numbered sequentially
- That there is the same Album title tag in every track
- That the album artist is “Various Artists” in every track (This one is key as it gives a huge clue to Roon that the collection of files is a compilation).
For example, an old Windham Hill compilation, “Windham Hill 25 Years of Guitar: Touch” is in my system as follows:
Top Folder: Jazz Compilations
Album Folder: Windham Hill 25 Years of Guitar-Touch
Track1: 01 Aerial Boundaries.flac
Track 1 metadata:
- Album: Windham Hill 25 Years of Guitar: Touch
- Artist: Michael Hedges
- Track Title: Aerial Boundaries
- Album Artist: Various Artist
Track 2: 02 Western.flac
Track 2 metadata:
- Album: Windham Hill 25 Years of Guitar: Touch
- Artist: Alex De Grassi
- Track Title: Western
- Album Artist: Various Artist
etc. etc. for the rest of the album.
