any of the older Tangerine Dream qualifies, such as Rubicon.
Classic tunes Iād associate with this genre include:
- White Rabbit (Jefferson Airplane)
- Journey to the Center of the Mind (Amboy Dukes)
- Eight Miles High (Byrds)
- Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix)
- Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (Beatles)
A few classic albums that come to mind:
- Disraeli Gears (Cream, for the album art alone)
- Cheap Thrills (Janis Joplin)
- In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (Iron Butterfly)
- Sgt. Pepperās (Beatles)
Lots of others. The ones above are (mostly) examples of music Iād still listen to, even ~50 years after hearing it on AM radio and LPs for the first time. The music survives the dated, nod-nod-wink-wink drug references and high toll on some of its best performers.
As the review says the first side is a āclassic body of workā. Second side (track 7) somewhat less classic though - evidently great live as part of a 30 minute improvisation but doesnāt work in the studio.
Thanks for Tides from Nebula & If These Trees Could Talk, right up my alley. I was surprised to see that Tides From Nebula are from Poland! I donāt know why thatās surprising, but I was expecting an American band for whatever reason.
Hereās my contribution to the list - from Finland, Hidria Spacefolk. Their 2007 release, Symetria, is my favorite.
Ah, my favourite genre! Here are some must-hear mind melting psych albums:
The most cited Brainticket album:
But the best Brainticket album in my opinion:
A 60s classic from the peak of the LSD-inspired era:
The first Gong album, and in my opinion the best:
And no list is complete without this psych classic:
And anything from the Ozrics, hard to pick one really:
And you GOTTA have heard this:
Thereās a few good Swedish psych bands but this offshoot of the Spacious Mind is the best:
And a classic:
I could go on and onā¦
The Olivia Tremor Control - Music From The Unrealized Film Script āDusk At Cubist Castleā
An old favorite.
Interested in the electronic genre āpsytranceā at all? There are subgenres of subgenres within it, hereās a few samples:
Love psytranceā¦would have added some albums to my list if it had been longer Shpongle are great too.
Standout (for me) is track 5 - People Are Strange - performed by Camera (who are worth further investigation as well).
This is a fantastic thread - you guys have given some great recommendations (How had I not encountered King Gizz before?) - Tidal had the vast majority of the picks; Iāve tagged them as āRoon: Psychedelicā and have a fun mix. If only Roon could automatically scrape recommendations, add the albums, and create these tags/playlists/bookmarksā¦
cāmon man; itās not a hobby any more if the software does ALL the work
The whole album has a nice vibe, but I really enjoyed āA Question Isnāt Answeredā on Sun Structures by Templesā¦ thanks!
Good old Krautrock. Still sounds fresh:
MotorPsycho!
Take the album āLittle Lucid Momentsā. Favourite track of mine is āYear Zeroā.
Saw them once live. What a partyā¦
