Random Playback Stops on Roon with MBP and Cambridge Audio Setup (ref#51C5VO)

Describe the issue

Roon randomly stops playing tracka, mid track. It happens seemingly on any type of track, irrespective of sample rate etc. I tried to solve this issue once before by setting Muse to resample everything to to the same rate and bit depth, and it seemed to work for a while, but maybe that was just luck! I have a 2015 macbook pro with both server and end point installed. No network use. Optical out of MBP into Cambridge audio amp digital in. I thought for a while it was some timing issue between the DAC and the laptop, but I have also tried running analog out of the laptop and get the same issue. It stops sometimes once every few tracks, and then it will be fine for a day, and then start stopping again! So I don't think the issue is with the digital side going into the amp. And I don't think its to do with the sample rate variability of my library. Any other ideas? 95% of the library is 16bit 44.1 aiffs ripped from CDs. It happens both when playing albums and when playing playlists. Re sync time is 500 ms, but I have experimented with various settings there and it doesnt seem to make a difference.

Describe your network setup

NO network use

Is this happening because you are getting a phone call by any chance?

Hi @Matt_Robertson2,

Thank you for your post. We’d be happy to investigate.

From first glance, diagnostic logs indicate that Live Radio is dropping out intermittently with at least one station (

) due to track download issues. The stream hands an empty value for stream/channel reference and Roon tore down playback rather than play a broken stream.

We can also observe logged sample loss reported by the Cambridge endpoint to RoonServer on the MBP when playing local tracks, but it’s not sufficient to overcome the buffer. System Output on the Mac is a different story - we see RAATServer and RoonServer disconnecting and the System Output Zone itself pausing automatically after receiving a Pause command from Roon.

First off, I assume you’re referring above to the dropouts with your library content, not with Live Radio?

Secondly, are you using the Macbook actively to play Roon, or are you using another RoonServer? There’s a second active RoonServer instance in your network, too. We want to make sure we’re looking at the right logs.

The simplest explanation for this particular dropout is the laptop battery saver or hibernation settings kicking in. From logs, the machine might be either actually going to sleep or tearing down network access to background programs (like RAATServer and RoonServer) to save power.

We’ll watch for your response. Thanks!

Thanks for the detailed response!

  • Im referring to dropouts in the library - I think I only ever used Roon Live Radio once, and I dont recall that stopping
  • the macbook pro is one computer that has Roon server installed, and holds my library, and is also the endpoint.
  • the second Roon server you’re seeing is not currently in use, I started to set it up in order to test if having the server and the endpoint on the same machine was causing an issue, but have not finished the setup yet. So at present there is only one server, on MB15.
  • re power - hmmm interesting. I have had Roon stop playing when I’m actually looking at the screen! I dont believe that its to do with power.,Sometimes Roon will stop playing and the computer is still very much awake. The laptop is constantly powered and never (as far as I know) runs on battery.
  • next time it stops, I will try and log the actual date / time so we can maybe look up on the log and see whats happening.
    thanks for your help

Here’s the last time it stopped: Sep 20 approx 9.05
Can you see anything in the log that might tell us whats happening?
This is where it stopped. I then went back to the previous track and played it, and then it played this same track totally fine.

Hi @Matt_Robertson2,

Thanks for sharing the above timestamp! We were able to review the stoppage and believe you may be experiencing a known issue that our team has already identified a potential fix for - it’s live right now over in our Early Access version of Roon, which I’ll link below.

Once we get confirmation that the fix is effective, we’ll then roll it into the next Production update, so if you don’t want to move over to Early Access, our next update should help you either way!

Let me know if you have any additional questions! :+1:

Great, thank you!
I have updated Roon (Mac OS) to early access… but I don’t see a link for updating the Roon server? I’m guessing only the Roon “player” software is in early access right now? I’ll keep an eye on it and see how it goes!

Hey @Matt_Robertson2,

You should be able to temporarily move your Roon Server build over to early access as well - it’s best practice to keep your server and remotes on the same build if possible.

Let me know if you run into any hiccups along the way! :folded_hands:

Hey @Matt_Robertson2,

We wanted to check in and see how things are performing - we’ll be monitoring for your reply! :+1:

thanks for checking in… unfortunately I had to go away for a few weeks so wont be able to check for a while :frowning: I didnt see in the links for early access a link for the actual server though… when I clicked the MacOs link I only seemed to get the Roon “listening” software. Whats that actually called?

Hi @Matt_Robertson2 ,

Both the Roon UI and RoonServer are in one installer, when you install it, both will be replaced. Do let us know when you are back from your travels, the fix for the issue should already be released to the main “production” version of Roon, so please let us know if it also helped on your end, thanks!

So far so good - thank you!!

We’re so glad to hear it @Matt_Robertson2 - let us know how the next few days go. We’ll be pushing this Early Access release over to production soon, so you’ll be able to migrate back once we confirm things have improved for you!
