Description of Issue

Fairly regularly - at least once a day, often more - my music will stop whilst playing. Sometimes all audio devices will disappear from the Roon client. And then about a minute later, the audio devices will re-appear and the music will start again.

Sometimes the audio devices won’t disappear and the music will just start again after a short gap.

My RoonOnNas log says this:

22.06.23-10:02:51 --- Not responding
22.06.23-10:02:56 --- Running

And my RAATserver log says this:

And my RoonServer log says this, amongst some other things - edited, caught what I think is the actual error on a subsequent occurrence. In this log, 192.168.0.1 is the RoonServer, 192.168.0.6 is my PC where I’m running the remote. “Roon Study” is my client RoPieee device.

So it looks like “too many dropouts” might be the cause. What can I do about that? This RoPieee device has been working fine for many years.

So it looks like “too many dropouts” might be the cause. What can I do about that? This RoPieee device has been working fine for many years.

Q1: Is this for all content, or, does it show up in streaming content and not in local music content?

Suggestion1:

I would play music to a different endpoint and see if it is stable first.

It’s for all content.

I will give this a go with a different endpoint: I have a feeling it is a problem across all endpoints but I’m going to confirm or disprove that over a period of a couple of days.

Hi @Jamie_Tudor ,

Have you been able to confirm if the issue happens across multiple endpoints or just one in particular? I’ve activated diagnostics for your Roon account and I noticed that you have a lot of networking interfaces active and are getting multiple IP addresses for your NAS connection. Is there any way you can temporarily try using just one interface to see if that triggers any change in behavior?

I moved back from a Docker install to the native QNAP install yesterday morning, the 6th July. I was experiencing similar issues using the Docker install.

The existence of Docker and various unrelated VMs on the QNAP gives the NAS a number of virtual IP addresses, but now I’m running Roon using the native application it should only be available on the physical, which is 192.168.0.1.

There’s only one physical network adapter in the device.

What’s the IP of the other network interfaces you can see? Are they 172.x addresses?

Cheers
Jamie

Hi @Jamie_Tudor ,

Apologies for the slow response here.

There were a few 172.X but there were also 10.0.3.1 / 10.0.5.1 / 10.0.7.1 IPs show up. I am not sure where these IPs are coming from but if you know I would be curious to find out.

I did have a chance to discuss your case with the team further though, and we are also looking at another possibility here, where you may have many albums by the same artist causing a performance issue in Roon.

Can you please try to navigate to Roon → My Library → Artists and Sort by Album Count, then use Command + A to select all of your artists.

Next, try exporting to an Excel file by clicking on the three dots next to Play Now at the top of the window and clicking Export, for example:

Then once you have this Excel spreadsheet generated, please upload it to the following uploader link and let us know once done:

https://workdrive.zohoexternal.com/collection/nqcgjac23027d90a441bda2c314de49d7958a/external

Please do let us know if you have any questions or issues generating this XML, thanks!

The 172.x and 10.x addresses are all virtual networks associated with docker containers.

I’ve exported my artists list to Excel and uploaded it via the link provided.

Cheers
Jamie

I think you might be into something with the multiple IPs theory. I temporarily moved the Roon Core to a Linux VM on the same machine which is isolated from all the docker virtual IP addresses and networks.

The problem seems to have gone away.

I don’t really want to run in a VM though. Is there any way you can tie the Roon core to one physical adapter? Almost like the “subnet for Linn streaming” option, but globally?

I’ve moved this installation to a Docker container now, using it’s own dedicated ethernet port, on it’s own dedicated VLAN.

The problem doesn’t occur in this setup either. In fact it’s super quick, much quicker than in any other environment I’ve run it.

So I think Roon doesn’t like it when there are virtual IP addresses or virtual docker networks attached to the same adapter that Roon uses, or at least not in my installation.

I’ll stick with my Docker container for now. I know this is very much in the “tinkering” category, but an option to manually specify your listening network address for hosts which have multiple networks like mine might solve this properly.

Hi @Jamie_Tudor ,

Thanks for letting us know your findings. I’ve asked QA to do some testing to see if we can synthetically reproduce similar behavior in the QA lab, though this testing will take some time before it’s reviewed in the queue. In any case, glad to hear that the docker private interfaces solution worked out for you!
