· Trying to use the new sort by "random" in Album view, I get the exactly same sorted shuffle every time (even when going into a different view and coming back to Albums, or when sorting by date and then trying to sort again by Random) - this happens in my Mac Roon app, as well as in my iPhone Roon app (different orders in each, but always the same "random" order) - how do I fix this so I can get a truly randomized sort each time I click that option (and not the same once-randomzied but repeated order)?
I now get a new random order of album - but this new order is what I keep getting every time I select sorting album by random (toggling between other sorting options, going out to another view and back to album etc).
So this process reshuffled the random view to a different “fixed” random re-order, and the bug remains the same
Also note that this issue also exists on your devices (so cleaning cache on my Mac will have nothing to do with this issue existing on my iPhone)
Weirdly, on my iPhone Roon app, I have the same problem of random sorting always showing the same album reorder, but it’s a different one then the fixed reorder I see on my Mac
I understand the confusion, but this is actually the intended design of the “Random” sort feature!
When you select Random in the album browser, Roon generates a randomized order for your library and displays it. To ensure that your navigation remains consistent while you are browsing, Roon remembers that specific randomized order while you are in that view. It does not automatically reshuffle every time you navigate away and come back, as this would make it difficult to find an album you just saw.
To trigger a new, fresh randomized order, you simply need to force a re-sort:
Clicking that button again acts as a “refresh” command, which will cause Roon to generate a brand-new randomized order for your albums, as you can see in the different results.
This allows you to either keep your current randomized list or request a new one whenever you feel like discovering something different. Let us know if this helps clear things up!
I recommend you update your release note and feature description to what you have described above.
The behavior of Arc is opposite to Roon apps - there the randomization recurs when going to a different sorting (e.g. by date added) and then returning to randomized; and clicking by random a second time does not work - exactly the opposite in hot regards to the Roon app. So, if a user figures out one, it wont work for them on the other..
Thank you for the detailed feedback regarding the feature documentation and the behavioral difference between ARC and the standard Roon apps. You make an excellent point about the inconsistency—having the randomization triggers function oppositely across our platforms is certainly confusing.
I have passed your notes directly over to our product team so they can review the ARC sorting behavior and ensure the feature descriptions are updated for clarity.
We really appreciate you taking the time to outline this for us. Happy listening!
