Reconfigure Roon backup on new MacBook (ref#D2DJO5)

Hi Benjamin - Yesterday I tried the following and received the same error message for all:

\Macintosh HD\Users[UserName]
smb://Macintosh HD/Users/[UserName]
\Macintosh HD\Users[UserName]\Sites
smb://Macintosh HD/Users/[UserName]/Sites

All folders above are marked as shared and file sharing for Roon is enabled in Privacy and Security settings.

In your opening post, you said:

If you are running Roon Server on your Innuos Zen Mini, and you are attempting to add a network-shared folder on your Mac as a Backup folder, then all the attempts you listed in your above post are not in the correct format.

That format (for a Mac networked-shared folder) is simply either:

smb://IP_address of your Mac/folder_name
or
smb://the hostname of your Mac/folder_name

Hi @Mark_Osborn ,

As @Geoff_Coupe noted, these types of entires won’t work:

You will need to locate the proper IP address or Hostname, you can find it under the File Sharing field, as per @daniel 's screenshot from here:

Sorry. I’m now totally confused. This guidance to find and use an IP address is entirely new after a lot of previous back and forth. I’ve now gone to General > Sharing > File Sharing per your guidance above. There are no IP addresses listed or available that I can see / find, only the names of the folders I have previously provided. Is there more specific guidance, please?

Hi @Mark_Osborn,
Sorry about the confusion. @noris is pointing you to the hostname which you will see in this part of the file sharing screen.

You can use that hostname as @Geoff_Coupe showed in his comment.

As an example if I wanted to share a folder named Music from my Mac the path would be smb://macbook-pro/Music

If you have any other question or need some more help please let us know! We’re happy to help.

Thank you. I found the IP address using the information provided in the latest response I received. I’ve attempted to input that information into the Add Network Share input in the Roon app as directed but, when I do, I get an error message that reads "There was an unexpected error: Invalid Network Path. If I add both the IP address and the names of the share files I setup, I get an error message that reads There was an unexpected error: UnexpectedError.

Hey @Mark_Osborn,

Thanks for the follow-up! We’re close to success, I can feel it.

What happens if you try:

smb://[your Mac IP address]/users

Are you able to then connect? From here, you could select your specific user folder on the mac and host your backup folder there.

Thanks Benjamin. I appreciate your optimism. I’d really, really like to get past this.

I tried smb://IP Address/ users as you suggested but got the same error message. Unexpected Error: UnexpectedError.

Hey @Mark_Osborn,

Thanks for giving that a try. Would you be able to share a screenshot of your ‘Add network share’ when you hit the error?

I’ve reopened it, so you can now respond to @benjamin and @vadim information requests.

Hey @Mark_Osborn,

Let us know how the above goes and if you’re able to share that screenshot - thank you!

Hi Benjamin - Here you go.

Hi @Mark_Osborn,

Thanks for sticking with us here! I’m curious - what are you attempting to do with the ‘sites’ folder? If your ‘users’ folder didn’t work out for you, let’s stick to your RoonBackups folder. Make sure that each subfolder holding your RoonBackups folder also has the same share permissions as your Backups folder.

Are you filling out your macOS username and password as well?

Hi Benjamin - Looks like we’ve finally had a breakthrough. I was using the ‘Sites’ folder because I was specifically directed earlier in the thread NOT to use the RoonBackups folder. Based on your guidance above, I’ve reverted to the RoonBackups folder and added my username and password. It appears Roon now sees the file location. See photo attached. Do I select ‘roon_backup_root’ as the backup folder?

Wonderful news @Mark_Osborn - nice work! From your screenshot, you can now simply select ‘Select this folder’ to select the RoonBackups folder itself. :+1:
