Reconfigure Roon backup on new MacBook (ref#D2DJO5)

Hi - New to this forum but a Roon user for several years now.

I recently retired an older iMac desktop computer and replaced it with a newer MacBook Pro as my primary computer. I’m running Roon core on an Innuos Zen Mini server.

Everything is working as it should, however, I’m unable to configure Roon backups via the Roon app on my new MacBook. I’ve followed the online instructions and entered the pathway to the backup file location in the Roon App, but I keep getting a message that reads “An unexpected error has occurred”, but with no further detail or explanation.

Everything I’m doing appears completely consistent with the guidance in the online instructions available via the Roon Community. Any thoughts or advice?

Hey @Mark_Osborn,

Thanks for writing in and welcome to the community! We’re excited to have you here.

We were able to request a fresh diagnostic report from your Roon Server, but didn’t see any evidence of an attempted backup - could you reproduce and share a more specific date and time?

With that, you haven’t included any information regarding your network, which is a huge component of successfully saving backups over your network. How are your Zen and Macbook connected to your router?

Please set up a direct ethernet connection from both devices directly to your primary router - ensure you’ve set proper file and folder share settings on your Mac, and see if that helps. Here’s more info on how to do this:

Note that in this case, you won’t be setting the folder on your Mac as a watched folder, but as a backup location - the steps are all the same, you’ll just be accessing the folder from a different location within your Roon Settings - you’ll be working in the ‘Backups’ section. Let me know if this helps! :+1:

Hi Benjamin - Thank you, and thanks so much for the quick reply. I have not attempted any backups since getting this new laptop and was only really alerted to the issue when I noticed an alert in the App the other day telling me that backups were not configured. That’s when I started investigating the issue but, unfortunately, came to a dead end.

Info on my network: both the ZenMini and the MacBook are connected directly to my router via an Ethernet connection. Storage folder is configured in the App to my Music folder. However, I don’t see any options to confirm the network path information and / or edit the file location. And, this folder does not appear as a share folder when I go in to Backups in settings.

In trying to connect the App to the file I previously setup for Roon Backups on this new MacBook, I’ve followed the steps outlined in the article you linked to, including turning on file sharing (which was set to off). Unfortunately, though, when I attempt to add the Network Share Folder in the App I get an error message that reads, “Could not connect to share: Unauthorized.” I’ve attempted to connect using both the IP address from the Ethernet connection as well as the WiFi connection, but both give me the same error message.

Apologies as I’m not terribly network savvy. Hoping there’s something simple I’m missing here, but any guidance appreciated. Thanks!

Mark

Hi @Mark_Osborn,

Thanks for the update. Can you please share a screenshot of the network share window from the Settings → Backup page in Roon?

The log trace we see shows the CIFS mount failing due to invalid permissions. It’s clear you’ve already checked, but I would double-check that you’re using the correct username and password once again and that they match what MacOS expects for this location. It might not be a protected location.

I’d additionally verify that Roon has local network access in Privacy & Security.

Hi Connor - Sorry for the delay. See attached. Is this what you were referring to?

If not let me know and I’ll get to the correct spot for an update for you. Thanks for your help!

Mark

Hello @Mark_Osborn ,

Just to confirm here, you’re trying to save the Roon backups to the Mac that you sent the screenshots from? If so, you’ll need to turn on Full Disk Access so that Roon can access the disk to save the backups to (+ removable volumes access if you are saving them to a hard drive).

Thanks. Are there more comprehensive instructions anywhere for how to do this? I’m afraid I’m losing the thread with all the back and forth here.

Hey @Mark_Osborn,

We can certainly help with more specific instructions!

First head back into your Mac settings > Files & Folders > and toggle on Roon (removable volumes)

Do the same for the Full Disk Access settings > toggle Roon on

After that, reboot Roon and your Roon Server.

Great work with this! In addition to this - head back into your file share settings on the Mac. Sometimes it is helpful to re-enable Account specific Windows file sharing by clicking the checkboxes (see the image below) off and on again.

In your case, you’ll see your specific Mac user profile under the ‘Account’ area - toggle that check mark off and on again.

After all of this, see if you’re able to successfully set up your network share for your backup location. We’ll be monitoring for your results

Thank you. I have enabled Full Disk Access for Roon, and restarted both the App and the Server. I have also enabled Roon Access to Apple Music and media library.

As for the next step, where do I access the area of settings that you reference in the screen shot above?

When I go to Settings > General > Sharing I see the following under “Content and Media.” I can’t find any settings for “share files and folders using SMB.”

Thanks.

Hi @Mark_Osborn,
You can find that screen by going to the Apple menu, selecting System Settings, then Sharing, and turn on File Sharing. Click Options and enable “Share files and folders using SMB” to allow access from Windows computers.

Let us know if you need any more clarification.

Thank you. I found the screen and checked the settings and everything is correct based on the information you’ve provided above. However, now when I attempt to add the shared folder to the backup, I get a new message that reads “Could not connect to share: host not found.” I’d attach a screen shot but for some reason the system won’t allow me to attach or upload anything today.

Hi @Mark_Osborn,
That error usually means that there is an issue with the host name or path that you supplied. Can you double check that you supplied the proper path?

Hi - I’ve followed the instructions for adding the pathname that were supplied earlier in this thread. The folder I’m using is names “RoonBackups” and is located in Macintosh HD > Users > markosborn > Music. I’ve tried going to finder, opening the file folder location, clicking “Get Info”, copying the file folder location as a pathname, and pasting it (/Users/name/Music) into the network share location field in Roon settings.

I’ve also tried formatting as follows:

smb://Users/name/music
smb://Users/name/music/RoonBackups
\Users\name\music
\Users\name\music\RoonBackups

I get the same “host not found” message for all four entries above. Any guidance appreciated. Thanks.

Hey @Mark_Osborn,

Thanks for the update - sorry to hear your issues persist. A quick side note, based on the path you’ve shared:

I’d suggest keeping your backup location completely separate from your local library folder.

You’ll also want to include two brackets for host sharing, for example: \\host\share

It looks like maybe you’ve only included a single bracket based on your reply above. Let me know if this makes any difference! :+1:

Hi - Thanks. I tried what you suggested above. It didn’t work. Same message as before. Is there someone I could speak with directly, please? We’ve been going back and forth on this for weeks and weeks on this forum with no resolution. I’m leaving town on Wednesday for 3 weeks so will not have access to my Roon server after tomorrow. And, based on the timing, this thread will be closed. If I have to start all over again I’ll be really frustrated. Please advise. Thanks.

Hey @Mark_Osborn,

To confirm, did you attempt a different location outside of your storage/music folder?

If you create a backup folder under the subfolder directory: Macintosh HD > Users > markosborn you may find success. Be sure each subfolder has proper shared settings as well, not just the backup folder itself.

You may also need to enable local network access to Roon if you haven’t yet - Go to Privacy & Security > Local Network > Look for Roon and RAATServer in the list. If it’s not there, you can click the + to add them.

  • Ensure the toggle is enabled for both applications.

Describe the issue

I am following up on a previous support request posted to the Roon Community entitled "Reconfigure Roon backup on new MacBook" that was closed on April 2nd. I have been traveling away from home for the month of April and was unable to resolve the issue prior to my travels. I am unable to configure a backup location for Roon on my new MacBook. I have followed all of the previous steps suggested in the prior thread including updates to privacy and security settings, file sharing permissions, backup file location suggestions, etc., but still cannot configure the backup. The latest error message I receive is "Could not connect to share: Host not found." Please help. Thank you.

Describe your network setup

Router: Archer AXE75; Music Server: Innuos ZenMini

Hi @Mark_Osborn,

Sorry to hear your issue persists! I’ve merged your threads to your original ticket for proper tracking.

Taking a look at your prior folder location:

I’d be curious if moving it to a different location within your Mac may help. What if you move the backup folder to: \Users\[Username]\RoonBackups

Be sure each folder within this subdirectory also has the proper Mac share folder settings enabled, and let me know if you’re able to set up the backup path. Thank you! :raised_hands:
