Release 2025.06

Hi,

I’m happy to announce the immediate availability of 2025.06!

This release was supposed to be rather small, but it turned out ‘bigger’ than expected. Most exciting part, at least for me, is the support for USB HID devices. This makes it possible to use ‘fancy’ knobs as remote controllers, but it also works for USB DAC’s that suppor the USB HID protocol. Combined with the new ‘follow display’ option this makes for a cool release!

The support for 2 USB DAC’s when using services other than Roon is also noteworthy. It solves some issues with specific devices like the Holo Red, but it’s also handy when using more than 1 USB DAC.

The rest is the usual ‘stuff all over the place’, so have a look at the changelog:

  • NEW: add support for USB HID devices as remote control
  • NEW: add support for InnoMaker Digi One
  • NEW: update remote units from ‘devices’ tab
  • NEW: [remote] option to ‘follow display’ wrt controlled zone
  • IMPROVEMENT: [services] support for 2 USB DAC’s
  • IMPROVEMENT: some UI polish to the Audio tab
  • IMPROVEMENT: improve support for Realtek based WiFi dongles
  • IMPROVEMENT: [display] improve displaying long zone names
  • IMPROVEMENT: make device discovery more reliable
  • IMPROVEMENT: make device table sorting order persistent
  • IMPROVEMENT: update Linux kernel

As always: enjoy!

Hello Harry.

Would you comment a little more about what the “follow display” functionality entails?

Thanks!

Nathan

It’s a new option on the ‘remote’ tab, if you have a display.

By default the controlled zone of the display and the remote are separate: you can control different zones with it. But with the ‘follow display’ option the remote controls ‘follows’ the screen with respect to active zone: so if you select a different zone on the screen, the remote controller immediately turns to that zone as well.

Hopes this clarifies it a bit.

Great, thanks, I get it now. Sort of like a “Use display zone selection” setting.

Thank you, @spockfish!

Can you expand on this a bit? I followed some of the discussion while this release was in development but I must have misunderstood some of it. I understand the support for USB HID devices but I don’t understand the DAC side of things.

Does this feature mean that for some new set of DACs, you can use Roon to control hardware/software volume? Do you perhaps have a list of which DACs this will work with?

Thanks again!

USB HID is the generic USB standard for input devices like keyboards and mouses. That’s what we support now. There are also some USB DAC’s that use this interface to implement basic control features (play/pause, forward, next) etc. It basically comes for ‘free’, but requires ‘the other side’ to implement it. That’s what we have done now.

I don’t have a list (nor own I such a DAC), but if you search for it you’ll find them.

I think, correct me if I am wrong, that when one can change the volume of a zone via Roon Remote with the “+” and “-” keys, it should be possible to use a USB HID device to change the volume of that same zone.

Amongst others. Play/Pause/Previous/Next also.

Indeed, also those functions (Play/Pause/Previous/Next) will than work. But that is an easy trick to check if it will work before one will buy a USB HID device.

Ferrum WANDLA with Firmware 2.x is a DAC that uses USB HID commands to control playback of devices connected via USB.

You can play/pause and track skip next/previous using the IR remote or the touch display of the DAC.

Works great with RoPieee and Roon!

Frankly if someone created a Wi-Fi remote with different coloured buttons for different zones and b basic features like play, stop, pause, skip, back and programmable volume buttons for a pre I’d be keen on that. It would be transformative for using Roon.

Hello,

After this update my streamer drops out frequently but irratically.

I’ve send this identifier: 6e115ee068ea2fce

It’s a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B Rev 1.5, USB audio and on a WiFi network using a TP-link Archer T3U (realtek RTL8812BU). All my other streamers work fine, these are connected using a wired connection.

I’ve already restarted the raspberry and modem and WiFi access point.

The drop outs have been there before, but once a day, now it’s once every few minutes.

Would like to here a possibility.

Kind regards,
Gabriel

Probably is your wifi. Did you try the onboard?

You’re right, with the onboard WiFi it works again. I’m a bit surprised it works due to the flirc case it’s mounted in, nice.

Thanks for your quick response!

Kind regards,
Gabriel

It’s not wireless, but I recently came across this configurable “remote” that looks like it would be perfect for multi-zone roon control. It’s a little too expensive for me to just take a punt, but I’ll find an excuse to buy it one day
