Remote troubles

Hi all, I’ve installed roon on my nas qnap ts251+, shared libraries, etc. For remote control I use a Windows 7 pc (works perfectly) connected via lan, and two Android devices, nexus 5 smartphone and Samsung tab 10 tablet. Sonore microrendu and amr dp 777 DAC complete my set up. Everything works fine, except the Android devices : it is extremely difficult for them to connect, the smartphone better than the tablet, but really rarely indeed. I avoid connecting them at the same time, the settings are OK, but really don’t know what to do. Any help?

Hi and welcome,

It sounds like your wifi access point / router is filtering multicast messages, which Roon uses for device discovery.

What wifi device are you using?

Are then any options you can adjust, like switching off [IGMP snooping]

Android devices can have connection issues with 2.4 Ghz networks. Try connecting on a 5 Ghz band and see if that helps.

Thank you for your time. I use a router and a switch, the second gives 1gb lan speed, the first works effectively at 2.4 Ghz (but lines are not busy at all and speednet test says 15/17 mega). Should I check router or switch settings? The first is technicolor (Thomson) tg784n v3, the second is a netgear gs108v3, thank you. In this moment, nexus is working, but not the tablet

Not solved. Now IGMP snooping is disabled both on router and switch, but it’s still impossible to connect the tablet, and very difficult with the smartphone

Which version. I have the Samsung Tab S2.

samsung galaxy tab A 2016. A curious thing: from time to time I can detect the tab in the audio output settings of roon (but not always, and I ignore the reason): well, if I select it as the roon speaker…it sounds! but no way to connect the remote app. same thing with the smartphone. they sound only if they are in stand by: if I try to resume, they disappear from audio settings and stop singing…

Hi @angelo_parodi ----- Thank you for the report and my apologies for the troubles here. I wanted to touch base with you to see if I can lend a hand here. May I kindly ask you to please verify the following information for me:

  1. You mentioned in your first post that the Win7 PC has no issues while your two Android devices are experiencing the trouble. Are all of these devices making use of WiFi?

  2. I also see from your posts that it appears that things have been randomly connecting and disconnecting (in regard to the Android remotes). Can you provide me an update on where we stand with these two devices (nexus 5 and Samsung galaxy tablet)? Is one able to connect? Are both still unable to connect?

-Eric

Hi Eric, here are my answers:

  • the pc is connected via ethernet cable, not wireless: only phone and tablet use wifi
  • in regard to the Android remotes, nexus connects from time to time, maybe once each couple of days, and after many attempts, samsung can never connect (only once or twice so far).
Roon is simply amazing, I’ve never listened at liquid music in such a pleasant way, so please help me solving this! My entire set up upgrades are based on turning off my pc and tv while listening (too noisy) and the tablet remote is essential!

Hi @angelo_parodi ----- Thank you for the follow up and and taking the time to answer my questions / share your observations with me.

Before we go ahead and collect logs from your remote device(s), I would like to verify some more information with you, based on our Knowledge Base article about having connectivity issues with remote devices.

  1. Can you please verify that there are NO active firewalls in your setup. If there indeed are, may I kindly ask you to disable them temporarily to see if things stabilize.

  2. Can you please verify that both the Nexus and Samsung devices are on the same IP network and have the same netmask. As you can see in the examples below:

The is a screenshot from my MacBook Pro running my Roon Core…

This next one is from my MacBook Air that is acting as a remote…

-Eric

Hi @Eric,

The smartphone and tablet are on the same network, and router firewall is disabled. I tried disabling the PC one (even if the PC only works as a remote) but no success. I don’t know if QNAP NAS has its own firewall, but I don’t think so…

In the last two days I could only control Roon via PC, no wifi connections at all.
I mean, the wifi connection works fine, but no connection for Roon remotes.

HI @angelo_parodi ---- Thank you for the follow up and sharing your observations with me.

As a small test, may I ask you to please have your Windows 7 PC temporarily act as your core to check if the remotes are able to connect to that device.

Just as a heads up before you perform this test, confirm that the firewalls are still inactive on this machine so there is nothing interfering with the remote connections :sunglasses:

Are you sure I can download a second core?

HI,
You can download an unlimited number.
However only one Roon Core (per licence) can be active at given time.
When you activate the licence on new install the license is moved to that device.

ta-dahhhh!:grinning:
today roon remotes are working fine, both. Can’t explain this, any idea?? Yesterday I called my dsl provider for verifiyng router settings and firewall, they made some mods but with no results in the immediate. Probably there has benn a restart during the night, don’t know… anyway, the remotes work, at the same time, perfectly. Hope this will last!
thank you for all, Angelo

this morning they don’t work, again…
I didn’t do anything else but switching on/off the amp (J2 FIRSTWATT), the dac/pre ( AMR DP777SE) and the SONORE MR (its PSU unit, a class A psu by audio gd, this one, DI-PSU
http://www.audio-gd.com/Pro/dac/DIv3/DIv3EN.htm)
Well, again, the wifi remotes don’t work, and can’t say why. If I turn on pc and use windows remote, it works fine.
please tell me if this helps or if you confirm what wrote on your last message
thank you

Finally I could address the issue : seems like my WiFi connection isn’t capable enough. Yesterday, when everything was working fine, I was alone in the house but today we are here in four, with 4 or 5 smartphones/tablets connected via WiFi. If I disconnect everything but the tablet, the roon remote app works, and the same happens with the smartphone. So… What can I do to improve WiFi capability in the house? Using a 5mhz connection could help?

Yes, if all the other traffic is on the 2.4, you would then have the 5 Ghz bandwidth all to yourself for Roon.

In my house the microwave oven and large mirrors wreak havoc on the wifi links to remotes. 5 Ghz helps but what really helped what installing a wifi bridge. I have two. One is a second Airport Extreme and the other is an Airport Express both set to bridge the wifi. This has made things much more stable and now the place is kinda like a cellular network as smartphones and tablets move from zone to zone.

Caveat: I live in a rural area; my closest neighbor is 300 yards away so I don’t worry about interfering with other’s wifi. If you’re in an apartment or urban setting, you might consider the impact on your neighbor’s wifi.
