ROCK/RoonOS crashes every few minutes on NUC8i5BE(X) after update to RoonOS 3.0 (ref#J94EQG) [Ticket In]

I have done this roll back process and am now back on 2.1 (build271).
ROCK is now functioning perfect again as it was prior to the update to Roon OS 3.0.

Thanks for the advise.

Will leave updates alone until you guys have figured out what the issue with OS 3.0 is.

Thank you for this information, but can you please distribute latest Roon Server version and OS 2.1 for a fresh USB install? I will restore from backup because I don’t trust the installation anymore after so much crashes and reboots.

I have done a clean install with latest USB image and upgraded to OS 3.0 and latest Roon Server. It works fine as long as I keep a USB keyboard and HDMI connected. As soon as I remove the keyboard and HDMI… Same issue and crash/reboot in two minutes.

When only USB connected it fails also. Now checking with only HDMI connected

Only HDMI connected, no crash/reboot for 5, 10 and now 15 minutes which is a record with this release. I might have found the issue. I am moving forward this way and will restore the backup and keep HDMI connected for now.

Restored backup, playing music, rescanning all albums. Stable for 90 minutes at this moment. No final call, but it looks like solved while HDMI is connect to a TV. In my normal setup Rock is only connected with LAN.

Playing music for more than 2 hours at this moment. Previously (without HDMI connected) I had crashes/reboots every two minutes. So to me it is clear. QA hasn’t been testing the OS 3.0 with HDMI/USB not connected. Bad practice! Again unfortunately.

Please FIX this ASAP in a new OS release.

Friday morning update: With HDMI connected, my NUC was stable overnight (15+ hours now). It seems clear that an active HDMI connection prevents the reboot cycle.

Note that my NUC always has two USB devices connected: an external SDD, and a USB DAC. But with no HDMI connection, and no music playing, the mere presence of those USB devices will not prevent the reboot cycle. The USB devices, and in particular, the USB DAC, must be actively playing music to suppress the reboot. Playing music over the Ethernet (which presumably exercises the USB to the SDD (though perhaps the track was cached?), but not the USB to the DAC) does not prevent the reboot.

Obviously, the OS should be … “ROCK solid” (I’m sorry) … no matter what combination of external devices are or are not connected. But until a hotfix comes along that provides that, the HDMI connection will be my workaround.

I was having the same problem last night. Left it overnight and the NUC was hot with fan running loud this morning - but no Roon, neither RoonOS via web or RoonServer. Here’s what I did next:

Step 1) I unplugged the NUC, waited 10 seconds and repowered it. The RoonOS did come up but then crashed again after a couple minutes.

Step 2) Power cycled again and when the RoonOS did appear, I told it to shutdown RoonServer and then Reinstall RoonOS. RoonOS did successfully install, but then crashed again. But I noticed that the RoonOS was telling me that my USB drives (used for music storage and backups) were read-only.

Step 3) Shut the NUC down again, unplugged the USB drives, restarted the NUC and this time it seemed to boot correctly and RoonServer came up. Up now for several hours and all seems OK.

Step 4) I plugged the USB drives back it and ran the Check and Repair on the backup dongle and music SSD from the RoonOS Storage screen. That successfully fixed the USB drive problems and Roon seems to now be working fine.

Haven’t a clue where in that chain I actually did something that fixed anything..

FWIW - this was on a NUC817beh

I have been following the steps. On the monitor, connect to the RoonRock Isee the Roon logo.

On the webpage of the RoonRock everything looks good. Online for 5 min.

When I play music. It wil stop. The time is longer now. But still stops

That’s strange and unfortunate. For me ROCK is stable, with HDMI connected, for more than 5 hours now with OS 3.0. So for me it is solved for now hopefully. But I have done a clean install with restore from backup after the installation of latest ROCK versions.

I dont use any USB or HDMI on my ROCK NUC, never have done.

I only have an ethernet cable plugged in.

So hoping a fix comes out that enables OS 3 to continue on this use case.

Version 2.1 has always been solid in same use case.

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

· Since the last update Roon is no longer working. My NUC (running Rock)constantly is losing connection, then reconnects after I log in, then loses connection again.

Hello everyone,

The team is still looking into the root cause of this issue, but we have a plausible theory that the issue is related to the HDMI output capabilities on this specific model of NUC. As @drw and @Berry_De_Haas noted, connecting a screen appears to let the ROCK system run normally on RoonOS 3.0.

Please try to connect your NUC via HDMI if you have a monitor, TV, or HDMI/EDID emulator available and are facing this issue on RoonOS 3.0. If you do not have anything HDMI to connect the NUC to and the power reset rollback procedure is not working for you, you can reinstall ROCK from a USB to get the RoonOS 2.1 operating system functional again, a Recovery/Restore should be sufficient:

Please let us know how this goes or if you have any questions along the way. Thank you.

Looks like it is definitely HDMI issue, i also connected it to free HDMI port on my PC monitor ( active port for my PC is DP so NUC is only connected to HDMI i am not watchig it on monitor) and it just works for now.

I tried to trick it by connecting HDMI only to HDMI switch without monitors but it didn’t work

I have the same issue. Changed the M.2 SSD (thought it was hardware-failure) and installed ROCK 3.0. The NUC no longer reboots constantly - but it still happens every hour or so. Roon Server was just updated a few minutes ago. Mayby that will fix it?

The Live radio loop issue with P8Jazz (and more) is back with ROCK 3.0 - I have asked support to look into that too.

I had a very similar issue, and have fixed temporarily by rolling back. Details below:

Hardware: Intel NUC 11 Panther Canyon (NUC11PAHi7, Core i7-1165G7, 16 GB RAM, single 512 GB NVMe SSD, Intel I225 2.5 GbE Ethernet, wired to a Sky Hub router). ROCK with Roon Server 2.74 (build 1716).

What happened:

- 30 Oct 2026 ~23:53 (UK time) I accepted the update prompt in the Roon app on my Mac. This installed RoonOS 3.0 (build 287) on the ROCK.

- From 23:54 to ~04:06 the Mac remote connected to the ROCK on port 9332 and lost it again after ~34 seconds, every minute (FOUND BROKER / LOST BROKER repeating in Roon_log.txt). That looks like the NUC reboot-looping.

- From ~04:06 the NUC disappeared from the network completely: no ping, no ARP entry, no web admin page, nothing on any other LAN address.

- With an HDMI monitor attached, the ROCK console showed RoonOS 3.0 (build 287) production installed, followed by a “no network link” screen. Normal reboots (several) did not change this.

- I performed the rollback from this thread (three power cuts after the Roon logo). The NUC came back immediately on RoonOS 2.1 (build 271) with Ethernet working, Roon Server still 2.74 (build 1716), and remotes reconnected.

- The ROCK is now offering RoonOS 3.0 (build 287) again; I have set updates to “Ask before downloading” and will stay on 2.1 until a fix is released.

So on this NUC 11, RoonOS 3.0 boots but never brings up the I225 Ethernet port, rather than only crashing intermittently.

Yes, same issue, constant rebooting of the NUC. Connected HDMI display, rebooted NUC, and it seems to have settled that issue. I can’t sign into Tailscale yet, that seems to be not working (although Tailscale can tell I have 1.104.4 installed on the ROCK), but at least its running again.

ROCK hardware: Intel NUC8BEH i7-8559U 16GB 256GB SSD

I too have an NUC 8 i5 BEH and there are no issues with frequent reboot. When I set up ROCK, I modified a few BIOS settings (disabled WiFi, digital microphone etc.) and maybe more importantly, switched the primary video out from auto to HDMI and secondary video out to none. Maybe worth a try

I also can confirm that if a monitor is connected to the HDMI and USB keyboard my NUC NUC8I7BEH - Core i7-8559U no longer crashes on RoonOS 3.0.

RoonRock is now playing without problems for a longtime now. The monitor is still connected

@noris – i tried @KMM suggestion regarding bios setting. unfortunately, that did not make any difference. i was also unable to get my nuc8i5beh to roll back using the procedure you suggested.

i will try the recover process suggested tomorrow.

And do you also have a monitor connected to the HDMI?

My NUC is headless and I have no HDMI device to connect to it due to its location in my server rack.
