I thought the OS was to update to 254 automagically. Now we’re out more than a week since that post, and I am wondering if it is advisable to manually update.

I would go ahead and update. If you go to settings/about does the rock look for or say there is an update available?
I usually manually do mine, so that I know when the update was done in case there are issues.
The promised automatic upgrade from earlyaccess 253 to production 254 apparently never happened, at least not for everyone. Many affected earlyaccess users simply did it manually, eventually. You probably should do that you get any future updates. See this thread, toward the end:
