ROKK streaming has launched

ROKK Streaming has launched in Europe/UK. They promise larger payouts to rock artists, who tend to lead a niche existence on other streaming services because the lion’s share of the payouts goes to pop artists such as Taylor Swift etc. A very interesting approach for anyone who enjoys listening to rock music and wants to support the artists.
I’m on day three of my 30-day trial, but unfortunately I have to say I’m not too impressed so far. The music catalog in particular still seems quite thin to me at the moment. And the app doesn’t excite me much either.
However, if Roon were to integrate ROKK one day (one can only hope), I would at least be on board for a year for testing purposes.

Roon is listed under What applications/integration will ROKK have in the faq section.

You’re absolutely right. I totally missed that.

Where does it define ‘HiFi Sound Quality’ I couldn’t find it anywhere on the site?

There is not so much information to be found, that’s true. Click on the little “i” in the right corner of the “Plans & Pricing”. There you find “ROKK is for music lovers. With “ROKK HIFI PRO” we provide Lossless Audio (FLAC 16bit 44.1khz) based on what is available from the artist/distributor.”

Hmm, the website describes Opus 160kbps as hifi quality. I beg to differ.

First of all, to avoid any misunderstandings, I have nothing to do with ROKK. I’m just an ordinary guy who also just clicks on the “i ”s. But because I like the idea behind ROKK, I would like to like ROKK too. But so far I haven’t really managed to do so. I’ll keep trying.

There are three plans with different prices on the site: HIFI, HIFI PRO, HIFI FAMILY. I quoted from the “i” of HIFI PRO, you quoted from the one of HIFI. So we are both right.

Well it didn’t work at all for me when I tried a trial

Note: I would not recommend taking a trial out for this. You are unable to cancel the trial from within the app or your web account. You have to email their support.

Edit: their support is prompt though and I’m going to make a few enquiries.

  1. sound quality
  2. app improvements

I’ve had emails from the CEO and COO.

They are currently beta testing their app with the 1st 100 subscribers and are taking onboard feedback.

Promising.

The lower tier is MP3 at 320kbps, and Opus at 160kbps.

I’d prefer the Opus to be no less than 192kbps, but it’s partially dictated by labels etc.

They pay the artist 10% (10% of what I am looking into).

They have lots of other music, and yes they have Taylor Swift

With Roon integration I could see myself subscribing. I may anyways as it is rock/metal foremost, which is good for me.

That does indeed sound promising. Apparently, I happened to catch the right time to be one of the first hundred subscribers. Without knowing it, I am obviously a beta tester. This also explains the currently still unconvincing music catalog.
I’ve already spent so much money on much more useless stuff in my life that I’ll probably treat myself to an annual subscription. And if access via Roon is possible within this year, I’ll probably be happy to renew.

Until such a time exists about ROKK being in Roon, I’ve suggested they focus on Google Cast, as it’s missing from the app.

The UI animations are buggy, so I’ve suggested they tone them down.

It’s the SQ that bugs me. For it to be up there with the other mainstream services I think it needs to offer CD quality at the lower tier, or at least not the top tier price.

I also can’t see the option to download/offline music. Maybe this is another limitation to their service to allow greater share to the artists.

I believe an update to the app will be dropped shortly. Maybe with some big improvements.

One such improvement will be the option to cancel subscriptions
