roo6D - The wireless high-end physical volume knob for Roon

Hi all. So an update. I brought the other dongle to the studio to see if it works and it doesn’t. I turned on the wireless spacemouse, plugged in the dongle, started rooExtend by unplugging the usb then replugging it into the power and it shows up as Connected but when I turn the dial the character in the brackets don’t change inside of the Extensions settings in Roon. I know that both dongles work in windows and these the dongles that came with my devices. Can someone help?

Not sure what’s going on. Some things to try:

  • make sure you have a playback zone selected in the roo6D extension settings
  • make sure the distance between the space mouse and the rooExtend box with the dongle is not to large
  • set the setting “Change volume at playback only” in the roo6D extension settings to “No”
  • do not use a cable connected to the Space Mouse while using the USB Dongle

So what happens is when I plug in the dongle after the rooExtend boots, the spacemouse lights up blue for a sec then turns off but there is not functionality. But once again when I plug in the cable it works well and it shows that Battery is 100%. Do I need to firmware upgrade the spacemouse and/or dongle? My License Manager for rooExtend is 3.2.0, my roo6D is 1.3.2 I am using the 60 day Free license that came with the rooExtend blackbox that I bought 4 days ago.

Lastly @Klaus_Engel I followed all your instructions and nothing worked. I tried both dongles that came with my 3dconnexion devices and nothing works except with the usb cable.

Sounds like you might have a defective device. Does it work on a PC?

Yeah totally works with the pc. That’s for both of the dongles. Is there any way to see if the dongle is paired? Can I find it in the logs?

Have you tried any of this?

How do I pair a dedicated receiver with my wireless SpaceMouse?

The SpaceMouse® pairing tool enables the pairing of a wireless SpaceMouse with a dedicated USB receiver. Once a SpaceMouse and receiver are paired, the devices are uniquely bonded and SpaceMouse data can be transmitted to the computer.

Normally, the tool is used to pair a supported SpaceMouse with a new dedicated USB receiver. Information on how to pair a 3Dconnexion Universal Receiver can be found here.

Download the latest driver

The latest driver can be downloaded from here.

Pairing

  1. Make sure the latest driver is installed.
  2. Connect the dedicated receiver to your computer.
  3. Launch the pairing tool by clicking Start → 3Dconnexion → 3Dconnexion Pairing

Troubleshooting

If the pairing process fails, please follow these instructions:

1.Verify the battery of your 3Dconnexion wireless device is charged. The LED should be green after switching the device ON.
2.Confirm that the new USB receiver is correctly plugged in or try connecting it to a different USB port.

So I gave that a try still no avail. I basically removed the Space mouse from the receiver and reconnected it. When I put the receiver in the roo Extend the blue light on the Space mouse came on and then went off but there was no communication throughout the whole process. Should I revert to an older version of the rooExtend on another SD card? Are the licenses transferable? Could it be something with the USB? The receiver and spacemouse works on my pc. I have both Ethernet ports being used. It’s really a mystery. I will post videos in the coming days to show the issues.

@Henry_Svendblad I have been reading the previous posts and saw that perhaps the new rooExtend could be shielding the receiver so I purchased a USB 3 extension cord. Hopefully that does the trick tomorrow. Otherwise I saw that you rebuilt your room vote and used another rPi. I might just give that a try. It is so weird that it’s not working right out the box.

Best of luck.

Hi all. So no go on the extension cable. I have no idea what can be the issue. I tried the extension cable with Windows and it works with my applications. I again did a direct connection a usb cable from the rooExtend to the spacemouse and that gives me the controls in Roon. @DrCWO would you have any suggestions? Do you think it is the box itself that could have an issue? Do you think it is something with the versions of roon6D and rooExtend? I am at a loss and a bit discouraged because I thought this could have been a great wireless solution for my Naim system. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

@Henry_Svendblad @Klaus_Engel One other thing that I noticed is that if I don’t have the dongle connected the extension says Disconnected. When I have the dongle plugged in it says Connected though no feedback is registered when I move the spaceMouse. Again only if the spaceMouse is tethered to the rooExtend does functionality work. Any further thoughts?

When using the Space Mouse and Roo6D, the lisence code keeps dropping out right in the middle of a listening session. How do you fix that?

Is anyone here has an experience with Power On/Off functionality of roo6D and Deep Harmony?
I can switch on/off my McIntosh C2700 with (awful) Harmony app on iPhone but Standby option in roo6D doesn’t pick ip this activity (volume control works as expected)

Maybe the problem is related to wired Mcintosh remote?
it has dedicated button to switch on and dedicated to turn off the unit:

Hi @Dmitriy_Kagarlickij,
this is probably a missing implementation in the McIntosh. Claims it to be Roon Ready?

If yes you should address this issue to Roon.

You need to create a “Listen to X” activity in Harmony using your McIntosh as the power source. Make sure that works as expected with Harmony (not roon).
Go to Deep Harmony extension settings and map this new Harmony activity to your zone and make sure you include source control.
Go to the zone in roon settings and reset to default and then add the source control Harmony activity and volume if used. Here are some screenshots.

Having used this for a few months now I can say it’s hit and miss in my setup and sometimes requires a reboot of my Deep Harmony.

Doc, it is incredible your roo6D extension! Thank you so much. I spent just 20 minutes and put everthing working!

I have 2 questions after play some time with my new toy.

  1. I have a specific network for audio (vlan) with stays Roon Server and rooExtended host. I want to update my firewall rules, so I want to check if I release only the internet access and the connectivity between RoonServer and rooExtended host is enough. (My home network have 15 vlans and I only allow package traffic between the component that I really want.

2.There is a setting called Change volume at playback only with changes the volume of the zone that I am using. Is there some way to configure this option to trigger some IR controller, to change the volume of my receiver?

Thanks a lot!

Hi @Issac!

I believe @DrCWO is travelling so I will do my best to reply based on my experience.

  1. I believe your rooExtend host will also need Internet access for updates. You can test this by navigating to the IP and requesting an update. 3.2.0 is the latest.
  2. There are a number of ways to get IR control in roon. DeepHarmony is the one I use. @DrCWO also mentioned he built an IR feature that can be added to your RPI, but I don’t use it so I will let him elaborate or perhaps someone else her has experience with it. Bottom line, it’s do-able.

Hi @Henry_Svendblad and @Issac,

it is correct that rooExtend need internet access. It checks for a time server at startup, checks the licenses you bought and also looks for updates each night between 2 and 4AM.

I have a FLIRC USB IR stick lying here that waits for me to build the planned rooIR extension to control volume via infrared. So please stay tuned it will probably come till end of this year.

@DrCWO now I have MacMini M2 (ARM) running as Roon Core and also hosting Docker container for DeepHarmony
I’m curious if it’s possible to run rooControl on Mac (e.g. in VM)?
