Hi Paul
Both my RooExtend Raspberry Pi’s are running the recommended Zexmte external BT antenna that DrCWO has recommended.
So much better than anything else that I have tried and much more reliable even when out of the way behind shelving etc

I will send you the system log.
I do use a metal case, but I also took the pi out of it case and repeated the whole procedure… no succes
I have also updated the boot loader. No luck either.
Yesterday I already ordered two bluetooth adapters (just to try). They will come tomorrow, let’s see. If that is not working I will order the one from ZEXMTE.
Cheers,
Paul
I have connection issues too since I use rooDial. My Pi4 (rooDial 3.3.1) is in line of site and about 0.5 m away. I start my desktop hardware every day with a smart plug. So the Pi4 has freshly booted everytime. It is pure coincidence if it works and how it works (play/pause only e.g.). If I replace the batteries all is working fine.
@Poli Can You share some more infos about the Pi4 BT connection issues? Maybe it is the solution to purchase a new unit.
You shouldn’t do this as you will miss OTA software updates for rooExtend that were installed between 2AM and 4Am at night.

Hi All,
Any benefit going with a pi 4 over zero for roodial? The 4 could be hardwired to network.
Anyone using more than one dial in a multi room setup? Anything to be concerned with?
Thank you!
Ben
Only Zero W2 is supported by rooExtend v3.x.x not Pi Zero W
You can use multiple PIs with rooExtend.
Got it. FYI - Your product pages goes to zero w. Same question above though. Any benefit going with the hardwired pi 4?
Please see the compatibility matrix in the Quick Installation guide in my download area. Not all my Roon Extensions are supported with Zero W2. Especially for audio streaming Ethernet is always the better choice. I personally would go the PI4 way.
Ah see. Doesn’t it show zero w and zero 2 work for roodial?
Yes it does. But Zero W does not support ARMv8. So for Zero W you can only run v2.x.x. This release is no more under development and you can‘t get updates or new functionalities. This is why I recommend getting Zero 2W or even better PI4 as those are future proof.

Dear all,
Today I have received a Bluetooth dongle and my problems connecting the RPI4 to the dial are solved. It all works perfect → happy camper
I am almost positive the raspberry pi4 I have (1.2) has issues with bluetooth. Had the same problem connecting it before to a DGT chess board.
Thanks for all help and suggestions.

DrCWO-
I wish your main page for rooDial had said Zero 2W. I bought a Zero W, case, power supply and Micro SD card off of PiShop.us. Anyway, I bought the lifelong license, was able to flash the older image to the SD card (figured out the hard way as it wasn’t booting up the new image). I’m to the point where I’m in the extension manager in Roon (Nucleus) and I can’t get it to pair to BT. I’ve attached a pic.
Pi Zero W is a bargain and absolutely fine using rooDial. You can’t do one of the advanced things with it but as a cheap device for rooDial it is absolutely sufficient. Anyway thanks’ for the hint I will update the page
Seems you haven’t entered your License Key in the rooExtend License Manager as rooDial did not show up.
Edit:
You must Click the blue “+” in front of rooDial in the License Manager settings and copy the license key in there. Also in my download area there is the quick installation guide and a Manual (for rooExtend-Box but software is the same) that probably will answer your questions.

I did copy and paste it in. I’m going to reboot the Pi Zero W to see what happens next.
After copying in rooDial should show up. Maybe the license server of Sellcodes is down for maintenance. this sometimes happens. Please retry some hours later…
Here’s what it looks like now. I seem to have more extensions showing up in this screen. It’s working. Do I need to go into Roon Extensions if I want to change the zone? For example, right now it’s a group Family Room (which are Alpha IQs) and Kitchen (Pulse 2i). If I ungroup it, where are the expected actions? Seems to be working in the current group. Neat little project.
Yes.
Playback zone is configured in setttings. You can also choose Zone Follows Playback and if you want to control volume for other non roon sources. Set “Change volume at playback only” = NO.
I’ll be using a Raspberry pi 4 in a metal case connected via ethernet. What kind of range can I expect from the Microsoft Dial.
Thanks
Hi @Wayne_Foster,
it depends on the type of metal case. Using the FLIRC case you can expect 2-4 meters depending on the amount of WiFi traffic around.
If you need more just get the ZEXMTE double antenna and if you still need more connect the antenna via a USB extension cable to the Pi and put it away from it one meter or more.
