rooDial a Wireless Volume Knob for Roon with Microsoft Surface Dial

Cool. Thanks. Can it connect to a Roon Core on a Synology NAS?

If the NAS runs Roon Core the answer is YES :+1:

Dr CWO:

Have you ever thought about implementing a digital volume display as a companion to rooDial? A display large enough I could place in my audio rack and see 10 to 12 feet away. The current small volume display in Roon is often not convenient on my iPad, especially when the app is in the background. I would much prefer the visibility and feedback of an always visible display.

Iā€™m sure this is not the solution youā€™re looking for, but with a Roon Ready device, you could set the volume control to the device and have this provided that device has a volume display.

Iā€™m now a software guy so no hardware development for me any more. Sure, I developed the good old Audiovolver years ago but I shut down production sears ago.

If you like you can take a loot at rooMax coming soon. It has a constant volume display and much more. Here a review of one of the Beta testers and a photo a bit later in the threadā€¦

I have a number of ropieee based 7ā€ pi displays that I use to show whatā€™s playing and has some control options too. I use this with roonuimo and roodial and now roomax remotes too.

What wireless control and software combination will give me the best wifi connection? I have moved to another house and canā€™t find my Nuimo Control or raspberry 400 (have a lifetime rooExtend license), so am strongly considering rooExtend and rooMax.

BT most likely isnā€™t going to work as my listening rooms are not very close to the equipment rack, and I noticed BT dropoff when experimenting with phone BT and headphones or laptop and BT speakers at same distance.

Thanks!

Quick Keys (and rooMax) donā€™t use BT but its own protocol. My experience is that it covers 10m with ease and is very reliable. In my new flat this is also true though two stone walls. So I recommend to give it a try.

If it will be too weak in your situation maybe a USB extender cable may help to place the USB receiver dongle closer to your listening room.

Thanks DrCWOā€¦ I keep getting these names mixed up, lol.
I actually meant Quick Keys (and rooMax). Iā€™m about 35 feet from the equipment rack that is in a closet, but I might be willing to try it. Iā€™d really rather just have a dial though so wide doesnā€™t flip out about yet another ā€œremoteā€. Itā€™s almost entirely to mute or adjust volume or next track it.

Just put the rpi in your listening room. Problem solved

Hi again,

Not sure what is the next step to do, but I have my new RooExtend box powered up, Ethernet cable from itā€™s WAN port is connected to my Ethernet switch, the red SYS LED is blinking slowly and the green WAN & LAN LEDs are solid.

Per the Xencelabs Keys Controller prompting me to connect to the computer and install the driver, I connected it to my PC with the USB cable and plugged in itā€™s dongle to my PC, and paired them per the Quick Keys Windows software prompts.

Then, I disengaged the Key Keys Controller from my PC, plugged in the dongle to the RooExtend Box and in Roon Extensions, looked for the RooMax extension. No luck. I see other rooExtend box 60-day trial extensions though.

Reading somewhere that the dongle should be powered on before the RooExtend Box, I powered the RooExtend Box down and back up. No RooMax extension. I restart my Nucleus Plus, restart Roon, restart RooExtend Boxā€¦ finally reset the RooExtend box. No RooMax extension. And of course, the Keys Controller is prompting me again to connect to the computer and install the driver.

Iā€™m sure I am overlooking many obvious things, but this is not as intuitive as the Nuimo dial and extension activation were. Thanks for any suggestions!

If you go in Roon to Settings/Extensions you should see this with release number 3.4.2:

Yes or No

If the release number of the License Manager is not the one visible in my screenshot above please get the rooExtend-Box manual from here and see how an update can be forced. You can find it in the Appendix starting at page 53.

If the License Manager has the correct release number please open the settings of the License Manager you should see this with rooMax included:

Yes or No

The Quick Keys dongle must be inserted before powering up the rooExtend-Box. If it is not plugged at power on the rooExtend-Box did not start the rooMax Roon Extension.

EDIT:
Please post questions regarding rooMax in the rooMax support thread.

Hi DrCWO,

My License Manager does not start with WZ like yours shows. It says RooExtend box - rooExtend - by DefiniteAudio GmbH. Oh, I see. I named mine RooExtend box and you named your WZ

Still says License Manager is 3.09

I will see about forcing an update so I can finally see rooMax show up.

Tried 5 different times to use the reset button, which was both easy to find and asy to click it once. Alas, nothing changes. Both WAN & LAN buttons are solid green, red button is slowly blinking red, and the license version in Roon extensions and via direct http: web address remains 3.09.

Which makes me wonder why since it has been hooked up for over a week, it hasnā€™t done an automatic update anyway.

Soā€¦ just did a Reinstall Roon Bridge from the web address for my rooExtend box:

System Info
rooExtend release: 3.09
Device: RooExtend-Box
then the IP number
Internet connected: yes
Auto update: 2024/10/07

No update that I see, though

I will send you PM soonā€¦

Hallo DrCWO,
nach meinem urlaub funktioniert das Microsoft Surface Dial nicht mehr.
In den Roon einstellungen fĆ¼r erweiterungen ist es noch sichtbar und lizensiert:

But it has completely disappeared under the extensions:

What happened?
Mike

Please check the settings of the License Manager.

Have you selected rooDial in the Controller section?:

Please also try to power off your rooExtend-Box and repower it after some seconds.

EDIT:
if it still did not work please send the system log after the restart to info@definiteAudio.de.
You find it if you press this button at the service Page of the rooExtend-Box.

rooDial is selected

and restart brings no change - rooDial is still missing in the extensions

I have sent the system log to info@definiteAudio.de

@DrCWO why does your website not translate to english?

It should
Please send me the URL you have trouble with.

Iā€™ve been running the dial from a Pi Zero W for 18 months, and itā€™s mostly working fine. The odd reboot of the Pi always solves the issue when Roon seems to lose contact with it.
Would I benefit anything from upgrading to a Pi Zero 2 W?
