Was listening happily then updated Roon remote and it now crashes as soon as I turn it on.

It’s very likely that now your Nucleus is on an out of date build after you updated the remote.
Can you navigate to it via the web UI to update it to the latest build?
Reinstall the Roon OS should do the trick if it’s not on say build 1234
Unless it doesn’t, which happens in some cases. We have seen several cases recently where a Nucleus used an older build for whatever reasons. Often because it was a newly purchased Nucleus or fresh ROCK install as these are not the latest versions automatically and first need an update. Some older Nucleuses also seem to have got stuck on an outdated build for whatever reasons. (It’s also possible to turn off automatic updates). Usually this went unnoticed, but then recent remote versions up to build 1219 started crashing when encountering this.
In these cases, the update through the web interface as recommended by @AceRimmer always helped.
You can also wait for the new remote update from yesterday to appear in the app store of the phone. This is build 1242 and in this update Roon fixed this remote crash when encountering an older Core version. Then you should be able to trigger the update from the remote (but in case this doesn’t work, the update through the web interface as recommended by @AceRimmer can still be done).
