Roon acquired by Harman International [Feedback]

Congratulations and good luck to your new journey!

CONGRATS to all concerned! I think most here knew that this might (would) happen someday. All-in on Roon here, and enjoying music & music exploration that much more since 2019. I know, not that long compared to some.

Anyway, the only constant is change, right?

No that’s death and taxes I believe.

Let’s hope this one pays off for all concerned.

I’m super curious who would have been ā€œbadā€. Will you share names and reasons?

Samsung to start a streaming service to compete with Apple and Amazon?

Congrats to the team and really well deserved this is stating the obvious !
Bit deflated about this personally however. This partnership would have been top of almost no-ones wish list, from perspective of the existing Roon user base at least
Is it just a play to expand on Roon Arc for their car stereo business? That could be interesting but it’s not really Room’s core reason-for-being previously. It’s a nice to have for a subset of users. Struggling to see the obvious compatibility and upside for streaming audiophiles

I think there is almost zero change for AM, but it goes up to have a global company like Samsung / Harman involved. So chances went up from 0 to 0.1 percent!

@Scott_Fletcher No way to ever know but maybe this was acqui-hiring?

Any one of the streaming services.

I do not believe that their mindset would fit. You mention Lifetime Subscribers. That probally would have been a hard sell with them and would not have happened.

Congrats Danny and Thank You for looking out for us Lifetimers.

There seems to be more than one thing that fits

Congratulations to @danny, @enno, and the rest of the team - you have worked tirelessly to produce an innovative and highly functional product that has facilitated and elevated the music listening experience for a great many people. Having done a bit more digging into Harman, I can actually see this as a very natural move for them and, I sincerely hope, an opportunity to further develop the reach and functionality of Roon as a product. All the best to the Roon team for the next steps!

I really don’t want to kiss ass but one thing I’ve always respected about Roon is the fact that the likes of @danny genuinely seem to give a s**t about what users want and feel. I know not everyone is pleased all of the time, but seeing the guys who run the show spending time reading what users actually think, be it here or on Reddit or wherever, is reassuring. I hope they hang around and I hope that carries on.

Apple

For the walls that it would build incrementally around the Roon garden.

There are some audiophiles at Harman… I’ll head out on the optimistic path until they demonstrate otherwise… Congrats to everyone at Roon!

Some Harman brands:

  • Harman Kardon
  • AKG
  • JBL
  • Mark Levinson [edit]
  • ARCAM
  • Revel

Hopefully the people in charge of this part are leading Roon

Sometimes they did and sometimes they had an opinion and didn’t, but I respect both

Well first congrats to the leadership of Roon of getting this done. I’m sure there was some sort of an exit strategy at some point and there are many advantages of being bought. First, you don’t have to worry all the time about cash crunches, making payroll, etc. Second, they got bought by an audio company (who themselves are owned by a tech giant) so at least the new owners have an appreciation for what they do and the customers they serve. That’s a lot better than getting acquired by private equity in my book.

That being said, most acquisitions do bring change at some point (outside of consolidating operations, which always happens). This is where I’m hoping being acquired by an audio company will help. Can Roon be integrated more into other Harman products, especially automotive? I see Roon settling into Harman’s ā€œLuxury Audioā€ brands which include ARCAM, Lexicon, Mark Levinson, Revel and JBL Synthesis…not bad company. Can Roon be better integrated into other company’s products? I’m sure this will be discussed.

Roon’s customer base is generally male, probably middle aged and definitely higher income. Not bad demographics which is typically of the high end audio community. Whatever happens next, the first order of business is taking care of the existing customers first. Roon certainly has challenges…the era of buying CDs is largely over and Roon generally serves those customers with legacy libraries and access to streaming services like Tidal and Qobuz. Being a front end to other streaming products is great for us customers but not a great long term viability solution since you don’t want a business plan completely dependent on others.
