Describe the issue

Core is running on Mac Mini
Roon software is up to date
I’ve been using Roon with a Sonos Move (original version) speaker via AirPlay 2 without any trouble.

I just added a couple of Move 2 speakers to the system. Roon does not work with the new Move 2s. I can select one as an endpoint and go through the motions of sending a music stream to it via AirPlay 2. When I click on the Play icon, the usual message displays showing the number of tracks being streamed and the Play icon turns to the usual Pause icon. But the progress indicator (the dot that moves along the horizontal line) does not change and the track position stays at 0:00.

If I switch to Sonos streaming protocol everything works. But I much prefer to use AirPlay because of other endpoints in my system that only support AirPlay.

I have confirmed that other apps (eg Spotify) can stream to the Move 2s via AirPlay. And I worked at some length with a solid Sonos support engineer who ran various diagnostics, etc. He strongly feels this is a Roon problem with AirPlay streaming to a Move 2. I think so too.

Describe your network setup

Verizon FiOS into the house via wired connection to an eero 6+ serving as the gateway. And 3 other eero 6+ units connect to that gateway via WiFi for coverage through the home. The gateway eero connects to a switch via Cat6 cable to distribute wired IP throughout the house, but only the Mac Mini Roon Core host uses wired IP. All Roon endpoints connect via WiFi.

Hey @James_Ballard,

Thanks for taking the time to write in - sorry to hear about your issue, it’s good to see you on the community again though!

An immediate next step to try : enabling compatibility mode when you have the Move 2 speakers enabled as a zone.

Are you able to test out hardwiring one of the issue devices to your router as well?

We’re seeing a few different reports of Sonos-related issues when attempting airplay - your above information will help us determine if you may be experiencing these known issues as well.

We’ll be on standby for your reply! :raised_hands:

Hi benjamin - and thanks. Forgot to mention I’d tried compatibility mode before, but I just tried again. It fails then too. I just ordered an adaptor to enable me to make a hard-wired IP connection to the Move 2. I’ll report the result here once I’ve received it.

Hi @James_Ballard,
We’ll keep an eye out for your response on the results of trying the adapter!

I’ve now tested with wired IP and the behavior is the same as with WiFi. In other words - Roon streaming to the Sonos Move 2 works fine with Sonos protocol over either a wired or WiFi connection. But it fails when using AirPlay protocol with either a wired or WiFi connection and whether compatibility mode is on or off.

And it is only a problem with the Move 2 model. The original Move works fine with AirPlay.

Thanks for the additional information @James_Ballard!

Our team has a ticket in with development to dig into this issue further, we don’t have any new information to share quite yet, but it’s in the queue and so we should have some additional details to share once the team has had more time to investigate.

Thanks for your patience in the meantime! :raised_hands:
