Roon app crashes frequently on iPad using Intel NUC for storage (ref#W5YO1F)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· I have a problem with Roon.

Often when I touch something in the app, the program crashes. I use an Intel NUC for storage.

I have Roon, Tidal, and have already reinstalled my iPad, as well as my modem. Do you have any idea, or could you take a look at my system?

I have also restarted everything several times. Kind regards, Eric

Hello @Eric_Besemer ,

We have checked the logs from your ROCK machine and did not spot any issues on that end. However, we did notice that your iPad is dropping its connection quite frequently.

Because of this, we have requested a diagnostics report from your iPad. Could you please open the Roon app on your iPad and leave it open for a little while so it can send the report to us? You do not need to do anything else after signing in.

Alternatively, you can manually save the logs by going to your iOS Settings > Roon and toggling on “Save logs to Files on next startup”. After doing this, please restart the Roon app on your iPad, open the iOS Files app, and navigate to the Roon folder.

Please upload the log archive you find there to our Logs Storage.

Thanks.

Alex,

Did you find anything yet?

Greetings

Eric

I am watching this thread as I have exactly the same same issue with my 5th Gen iPad mini - frequent crashes when I touch artwork either when scrolling or just browsing . Playback continues even when the app is down and it seems to recover its state correctly when restarted. I am using a Roon Server on an Ubuntu Linux mini pc fwiw. Let me know how the investigation progresses and if I can be of assistance.

Roon crashing on iOS/iPadOS is just a thing you have to live with. I have a new M5 iPad Pro now and it crashes as much as my mini does and all previous iPads I’ve had.

Specifically if you do allot of browsing and meta data changes it will crash eventually. I can’t remember a time when it didn’t.

Wow, so the iPad is the problem?

So Roon should solve that.

I have the problem now for 1 month

I have a Pro M2 and it never ever crashed in several years

Hi Alex,

reading the messages here, it seems there is a problem with the iPad versus Roon.

So we can conclude that Roon’s technical support is facing a challenge.

Because the way things are going now, it is a major annoyance.
It has been going like this for me for about 5 weeks now,

since an update from Roon or Apple.

Hi @Eric_Besemer,

Thanks for the follow-up! From a fresh diagnostic report from your iPad Roon Remote, we’re not seeing any obvious errors around crashes.

Could you please fully remove the Roon mobile app from your issue iPad and perform a fresh install? From there, can you please share a more specific date / time/ name of track playing the next time your iPad crashes?

Thank you! :raising_hands:

I did that 2 hours ago.

Also, when I have Roon Radio on and click on an album, I get a crash and the message “search for an audio zone”.

And 10 minutes ago a crash again album east west from the third mind

and things are already happening behind the scenes.
For instance, listening to music is hardly fun anymore.

Hi @Eric_Besemer,

I’m reviewing the logs and, though there aren’t specific crash traces, several log files end abruptly when your iPad attempts to retrieve the volume from the iOS system. Could you please check if you have enabled the use of hardware buttons to control volume in the Roon settings? Also, does the issue persist if you try reinstalling the Roon app on your iPad? Let us know how it goes.

The glitches occur when I activate another track in a playlist or switch something with a radio station in Roon.

I have reinstalled Roon, Tidal, and my iPad.

Oh right, I use the latest versions of all programs.

And the problem arose after an update to Roon or Apple.

Hello @Eric_Besemer ,

On your iPad, can you please navigate to Roon Settings → Setup and see if Enable Lockscreen Controls is turned on? If so, can you try to turn this feature off and see if it has any impact on the crashes?

this option is always set to “no”
I also have

Operating System

OK

Version 1.0 (build 259) production

Running 5 days, 12 hours, 23 minutes, 19 seconds.

Roon Server Software

OK

Version 2.62 (build 1641) production These 2 re installed

I hope this solves the problem…

There are still small dips, but it is much better.
So far…

Do you have any more suggestions?
