Roon App (on Mac) cannot connect to QNAP NAS

Core Machine (MacOS Big Sur 11.2/Roon version 1.7 (build 710))
see above details

Network Details (Including networking gear model/manufacturer and if on WiFi/Ethernet)

Both QNAP and Mac are hardwired to unmanaged switch (Xfinity cable modem/WiFi router)
QNAP has fixed IP: 10.0.0.253
QNAP Name: iTunes-Server1
What mounts on my desktop is a “Volume” called: “Multimedia”
though there is technically a Volume called DataVol1 that you see only when logged onto the QNAP - the Mac doesn’t see this.

Audio Devices (Specify what device you’re using and its connection type - USB/HDMI/etc.)

Levinson 30.5 DAC connected to iMac 27" computer via Toslink

Description Of Issue

First: Roon launches and I CAN play Qobuz over Toslink to Levinson DAC, so that works fine.
I cannot get the Roon app to acknowledge my QNAP NAS.
I do understand the process: “Add Network Share”
For Network location: smb://10.0.0.253/Multimedia
Put in Username and Password, then hit Add Network Share

What I get back is an unhelpful message that says: “There was an unexpected error: UnexpectedError”

Two ideas:

  1. Reading the material it says “special characters” aren’t allowed in the password (a key to good security). My only "special characters are dashes (-), no other.

  2. I do use “AFP” as it solved ALL of my previous issues in running iTunes on the Mac. If you look on the Mac, the QNAP is actually listed as “iTunes-Server1(AFP)” and “iTunes-Server1(TimeMachine)”, the second being unrelated to the Multimedia folder/volume.

I’m out of ideas otherwise. I did try the name “iTunes-Server1” instead of the IP address, but same result.

ALL help ULTRA GRATEFULLY APPRECIATED!!!

Is SMB turned on in the QNAP? I don’t have a QNAP, but in my NAS I had to enable SMB, it was not on by default.

Well don’t I feel stupid now - heavy sigh. MAJOR THANKS.
Turned on SMB (not an intuitive process), configured it for SMB 1.0, 2.0, 2.1 and 3.0
I probably need to go back and set it up for large MTU given how large music files are.
Will have read how to do that.
But off it (the Roon app) went; scanning and importing tracks.
I have just under 300,000 tracks, so I suspect this will be days.
Can’t wait to see how it comes out in the end.
Again - MAJOR THANKS!!

Glad it’s working…it’s good security practice to switch SMB version 1.0 off if you can, so worth considering it usually doesn’t break anything.

I would leave your MTU this has nothing to do with the size of your music files, it’s to do with the Ethernet packet size.

Good idea on the SMB 1.0
On the packet size, I figured since everything moves out of the NAS via Ethernet, raising the packet size could improve throughput.
Thanks again VERY much

Increasing the packet size should in theory increase throughput but I doubt that should be an issue for streaming the music files. Also unless all your devices in the path of transmission support jumbo frames you may run into performance issues.
