Roon ARC experiencing black screen, freezes, poor connection, and buffering (ref#ORX03D)

Hi @Matz,

Your symptom differs from the OP so we’re going to split your post into a dedicated thread momentarily.

@AgDev01, some useful tests that will help us isolate the issue:

  1. If you can, bypass the switch in this topology. Do you have any custom rules or settings you’ve enabled in any of your router or switch settings?

  2. Diagnostics show upstream requests from RoonServer on the PC are returned with generic refusals - software somewhere in this network, most likely on the RoonServer machine, is restricting Roon’s traffic.

  3. The dropouts you’ve reported in Roon are due to accumulated sample loss within the LAN, according to diagnostics. Several endpoints in a Grouped Zone are requesting samples that have gotten dropped en route between RoonServer and endpoint, within the network. The missing samples don’t arrive in time to buffer, and the audio stream breaks.

Taken together, these symptoms suggest RoonServer, on this machine, is having a difficult time downloading, uploading, or distributing audio to endpoints and to ARC.

If there are network components not mentioned in your description, please elaborate fully to equip us troubleshoot with precision. I recommend double-checking that RoonServer’s processes are excepted in any anti-virus or security software, particularly if it can statefully handle traffic.

As for the symptoms within ARC, we have multiple tickets created form this thread that should release into a future Early Access build. Those address the black screen issue on the head unit itself, as well as the crashing upon foregrounding the app.

We’ll watch for your response.

Thank you!

  1. No custom rules or settings or anything that would limit it.
  2. Nothing that i know of. I checked windows firewall and it seems fine.

Full topology for my roon system currently

Unifi Gateway Max → UniFi Flex 2.5Gbe switch → PC (AMD 3800x) & NAS (currently running library off of SSD attached to PC)

Unifi Gateway Max → Netgear Gbe switch → Ropiee Endpoint

Unifi Gateway Max → TrendNet 2.5Gbe PoE switch → Unifi Wifi 7 Pro AP → Bluesound Pulse 2i

I did just notice that the Flex switch was reading as 1 Gbe so i fixed that but everything else is normal. Cant get rid of the switch totally as the NAS with the library is on it as well. I can switch the Ropiee Endpoint back to Wifi if that is better.

Hey @AgDev01,

Thanks for your patience! We’ve got some stability improvements coming in Early Access that should help with this issue. Our current focus is on UI fixes and performance, and upcoming refactoring should make a big difference in the next few builds. In the meantime, we’ll work on reproducing the issue with a head unit as soon as one is available.

Hang in there—things should be improving soon! :raised_hands:

Hi @AgDev01,

The ARC improvements mentioned above have been released to Early Access and will ship in the next public Roon update. Please let us know if this improves any of the symptoms you’ve been having. Thank you!
