Roon & ARC have become incredibly unreliable for me - what is going on?

Thanks @Luca_Impala,

sorry to hear you run into these issues.

But again, great to get additional reports on these issues in here. I hope this topic will get big enough eventually to force Roon support to be a little more active here. They have been shockingly inactive.

I have the same suspicion that the cause could be switching from WiFi to cellular and vice versa.

Think I am seeing something similar. I canā€™t say 100% it is triggered by ARC, but several times recently Iā€™ve got home and found the core in this strange zombie state. It is running and you can do stuff like trigger a storage rescan, but going to albums, artists or anything library related just hangs

The core is running on a Windows Server 2022 virtual machine.

The network is all wired ethernet.

Memory usage looks normal

Read through all comments hoping to find a solution but it looks like the problem is still unaddressed.

I have exactly the same issue. Iā€™m a new Roon user and when I use the Roon Remote app tilt works fine. But as soon as I start using the Arc app, Roon becomes unresponsive after a couple of songs (from Qobuz library). Roon Core still running. Arc check looks fine. But only thing that solves it, is a roon core reboot.

My roon Core is on a Mac mini m2 with 16gb memory. It also runs a Plex server which streams without any issues. So the arc issue isnā€™t related to my network

Iā€™m not sure itā€™s linked to what Arc is playing. My last two have happened when listening to downloaded music so I didnā€™t realise the core had crashed till I logged in on another machine to a remote or client. Also on one of those occasions I was on my local wifi the whole time. Iā€™m often only using ARC for itā€™s better support of DAC on Android. The only way I know the time it failed is because scrobbling also stops as seemingly this is coming from the core not Arc.

Thought to check the system service log this time as well as server and RAAT but again nothing there. The last entry is over 2 hours before the crash and it shows it running as normal unfortunately.

Iā€™ve retired ARC itā€™s just not fit for purpose. Conked out after two mins this morning, switched to PlexAmp flawless performance on my commute and in office, ARC tends to get dropouts on the office Wi-Fincld not reason regardless of bandwidth chosen. Plex perfect also could stream lossless over cellular all the way to work which ARC fails to doz Sorry Roon but ARC is just not good enough.

The same here. Iā€™ve also retired ARC, and given up hope of support ever acknowledging their programming has a problem, not our systems.

Meanwhile I have been using Plex flawlessly for two months, every day, and with zero crashes. Only reboots of the server were for updates. This using the same ā€œproblematicā€ network I have here on Roon supportā€™s opinion.

Seeing so many with the same problem gives me a thin hope maybe this gets sorted out in the future. Too loud to ignore, too widespread to blame on individual user systems.

And look what this mornings ARC failure has done, what a surprise it killed my core. Just about to listen to some music after dinner and I get this this.

yup me too, retiring ARC as well. Finally finally had my wife actually using Roon, and now has become very unreliable because of this ARC issue. I will actually dig into Plexamp once again. This is a bit of a shame. Too bad we donā€™t hear anything from the official Roon support people.

Exactly the same symptoms here for me, itā€™s been going on a couple of months now with no feedback from support. I have stopped using ARC and probably will be very reluctant to return to it once they address the issue.

How are you guys so restrained with your comments? Or perhaps the realists have had their posts deleted or stealth edited by Roon mods?

The OP posted on 20 July, 2023 and we had one response from ā€œsupportā€ a whole month later on the 25th August! Since then NOTHING. There are countless users experiencing the same issue (myself included) with Core crashes after using ARC for a short period of time. Itā€™s beyond a joke that ā€œsupportā€ are radio silent on this issue and Iā€™m frankly shocked at the lack of outrage in the thread . ARC is a half baked, broken app even a year after release and Roon ā€œsupportā€ is an absolute disgrace.

I bet theyā€™ll be quicker at deleting or stealth editing my post than they will at addressing the real and problematic issues outlined in this thread.

Be careful what you say :joy: @DonRom. Not so long ago I also said it was a joke and got a warning not to start a rant.

But you are absolutely right, it is a shame that a there is absolutely no response as how this is going to be fixed. I canā€™t open ARC and at the first scroll it crashed or complains about poor connections. Which is nonsens, I have a decent network with a fast fiber connection which is monitored and have a 100% uptime.

I use Plexamp - which works flawless - but I rather donā€™t want to ā€œmaintainā€ two systems with playlists and tags for inhouse or on the go.

Has anyone had issues while using ROCK, or is it all installations on an OS? (Just wondering)

@Formula, I might misunderstand your question but literally my initial post described this issue using ROCK on a NUC as my Roon server.

But not just. The issue can also randomnly appear after staying on the same network for a while.

You are correct. ARC still runs and you can play downloaded music without problems. The play history is just not communicated back to the core as the core is crashed rendering the communication with the ARC client broken. Scrobbles are not uploaded for the same reason.

Itā€™s a real shame. I cannot really switch to Plexamp as I often switch between Qobuz and my local music. But I can definitely understand your reasoningā€¦

My biggest complaint is regarding the abysmal support provided here. Obviously a software can contain bugs and sometimes it takes time to correct them but the sheer lack of acknowledgement and support is just downright bad and does not give me hopes for the future of Roon in general.

Thanks for your honest words. I can only wholeheartedly agree with you. I do not know how important paying customers are to Roon staff but apparently not important enough to provide any kind of support.

Hi, Iā€™ve just reached out to Danny and Enno on X for help. It seems they are not very active on the platform formerly known as Twitter, but just maybeā€¦

If someone has a Meta/Facebook account, could they try to reach out perhaps? I really love Roon, and want to try to help them out. But in order to do so, we do need some way of actually being able to actively communicate with the company.

Bump for @connor

Yeah the lack of Qobuz is a limiter but I generally listen to my own stuff on the go and I can use Qobuz app if I want something else.

No sorry, thatā€™s my fault for forgetting about the first post details. I havenā€™t come across this issue and thought others had experienced it while running roon server on an OS. Wanted to see if anything was triggering it, etc.
