Describe the issue

Arc Settings page says Roon Server status not connected, tried port forwarding and Tailscale

Describe your network setup

ISP Community Fibre London UK (1Gps), Linksys SPNMXC56 router, iPhone 13 on Three network, tried 4G & 5G with decent internet connection

If you go to Settings → Roon ARC from a normal Roon client (not ARC) what do you see.

Post a screenshot and a copy of any diagnostic text displayed.

From what I have read, Community Fibre use CG-NAT to provide you with an Ip address.

If this is the case, then you will not be able to get port forwarding to work. Instead you will have to use Tailscale.

You say you have already tried Tailscale. Did you follow the appropriate guide to set it up? They are linked from the Web page at:

You will need to follow the link appropriate to your Roon Server platform.

However, you will not find any instructions for Tailscale setup on Nucleus and Nucleus Plus devices (or ROCK installations employing BIOS Boot) because the latest build of RoonOS that they support does not support Tailscale on the Roon Server.

Instead, if you have such a device, then you will have to setup Tailscale on a separate computer (Maybe a Raspberry Pi) as a Subnet router. See:

Hi Wade, thanks for being on call!

The (terrible) Linksys app lets me enable port forwarding, I used the above port number. I too have heard CF don’t currently allow port forwarding on the 1 Gbps service (some debate as if you’ve been on it before the limitation you might still have the ability) but the Linksys app gave me hope, I guess it’s not to be.

I found the Tailscale guide reassuringly straightforward and it actually worked briefly while I was on the M4, however it’s never worked since despite deleting the app, signing out and back into Tailscale, rebooting server etc.

As your latest screenshot still shows „Ready“, did you disable the port forwarding in Roon again when setting up Tailscale? I wonder if somehow it might interfere. The guide says to do this in step #3:

Yes thanks, I tried Tailscale with and without port forwarding disabled. The only time Tailscale did briefly work was with Roon saying port forwarding was working (i.e. as per screenshot, but without actually enabling it inside the router).

Meaning that you disabled the port forwarding in Roon → Settings → ARC by entering “0” in the port value?

Yes, like this:

Hi @Nadeem_Khan,
Thanks for writing in to ask us about this issue. Are you using IPv4 and IPv6 at the same time? If so please disable IPv6 and try tailscale again. Please let us know the results.

Hi Daniel- thanks for your suggestion. I disabled IPv6 on the router, signed out and back into Tailscale, deleted and downloaded Arc, restarted Roon server, but problem persists as before.

Hi @Nadeem_Khan,

Thank you for your patience and we apologize for the long lapse in responding.

It doesn’t look like ARC has ever reached your Nucleus One via Tailscale per our diagnostics.

From your posts, it seems that RoonServer briefly automatic configured port forwarding via UPnP and reached ARC, but subsequent attempts to re-establish the same port forwarding failed.

I’d first uninstall ARC completely from the phone once more. For due diligence, make sure you’re signed into Tailscale in the Nucleus One web administration page. Next, make sure Tailscale on the phone is accessing the same Tailscale network in the Tailscale app.

Then reinstall ARC. What do you see in the ARC Settings page from there?

We’ll collect diagnostic data on the backend to confirm what’s happening.

@connor thanks for the assistance, I’ll try this when I have a spare moment and post back

Hi @connor I’ve done as you suggest, deleted Arc from phone, checked I’m signed into Tailscale on Roon web admin page, checked in Tailscale on phone that both phone and N1 are logged in to same TS network (screen shot attached) reinstalled Arc. As before, it works if I’m on the same WiFi network but not over cellular.

Hi @Nadeem_Khan,

A few suggestions here, as this is possibly related to the iOS network change or Tailscale settings.

First, try disabling VPN-on-demand within Tailscale on this iPhone.

Next, when switching from WiFi to cellular, try toggling Tailscale off and back on.

Confirm in your iOS Cellular Settings page that both ARC and Tailscale are permitted to use cellular data.

Verify on your RoonServer machine that no other network interfaces (like the WiFi address, if you are using ethernet) are active. RoonServer might be switching from Tailscale to another interface in the background.

Lastly, reach out here if any of the above suggestions change the symptoms for you. We’ll watch for your response. Thank you for your patience.

Hi @connor thanks for your further suggestions. On phone, VPN on demand was already defaulted to off (I’ve tried toggling it), I tried turning Tailscale on and off when switching to mobile and my Roon server is a Nucleus One so no WiFi ability; symptoms remain as before.

Hi @Nadeem_Khan ,

These two look like different subnets, if they were on the same Tailscale net it should theoretically be the same subnet. Have you configured your Exit Node properly in Tailscale?

Hi @noris - please tell me where to find that setting. I’ve only downloaded Tailscale on my phone, and I can’t see a setting for subnet/exit nodes. Do I need to also download it elsewhere? Please let me know exactly what I need to do/change. Thanks
