Roon confusion with MusicBrainz data

I am a retired old codger, and I live on the south of the Isle of Wight. As daft as it seems, it appears that I (and a very helpful ‘colleague’ from over the pond who keeps me on the straight and narrow) have taken on the responsibility for entering the monthly BBC Music Magazine CD into MusicBrainz. Daft isn’t it!

When Roon picks up the metadata from MusicBrainz (as it probably does as the BBC disc seems only to be present there and in Discogs), it extracts ‘Credits’ to show within the listing of the album. In the case (and I’ve seen it happen in other cases as well) of the latest disc, it has identified the two soloists and the composer correctly but what it also attempts to do is link the soloists with the orchestras and tries to show them as a single entity as well, which of course is not in Roon’s database. It just identifies them with the first letter of each and pairs the two calling them a single ‘Primary Artist’.

I, (and my ‘colleague’) have scrutinised the entries in MusicBrainz and all entries appear to be correct and adhere to MB’s guidelines. It therefore rests with Roon to investigate why this is happening and attempt to correct it as it makes no sense at all to have Primary Artists consisting of more than one entity.

I would like to hear any constructive observations and a road to a possible solution.

Thanks.

I have moved your post from Uncategorized to Support > Metadata so Roon staff can see your post.

It would be really helpful if you could post a link to the MusicBrainz entry and a screenshot of the album and credits you are concerned about.

Can you make a screenshot of what you mean? I collect the BBC CD’s and have 110 in roon but I don’t see, or don’t understand, what you describe. The most recent one I have is from October: Copland/Ives v34.17.

Here is the link:

Here is a clip of the Roon entry:

May I suggest that you follow this thread and see what transpires?

If you still need info, do let me know.

Best, Tim

Its not clear what your issue is. So I will guess from your screenshot that it is that roon is concatenating the orchestra and the conductors with a comma.

If it is that, I am not seeing what you see. I have a subscription to BBC Music Magazine, so I have just ripped the November CD using dpPoweramp, it looks up Musicbrainz and cannot find the composers or the conductors, only the orchestra, BTW. I have made no edits and imported into roon. Roon does see the composers and conductors and I see this:

Everything is as expected and I see no concatenated artists.

Maybe you meant something else?

Can you confirm Roon Settings → Library → Import settings tag delimiters for artists and composers.

It appears to be a semicolon.

Methinks a small light is shining here?

Tony, above, seems to be getting quite a different result from the same source. Mind you he is ripping using dbPoweramp. I am currently ripping using my Innuos Zenith MkIII and that does not seem to be finding any data at all. Their Sense software just fails every time. It’s only when viewed in Roon that the metadata becomes available. I suspect that there is more than one issue at play here.

Try adding a comma, i.e. ; , (with a space).

Try identifying them with MusicBrainz Picard after ripping to make sure that software isn’t changing the metadata.

dbPoweramp explicitly says it is looking up Musicbrainz but finds very incomplete metadata. It finds no composers and no conductors, for example.

It sounds like your Innuous rip has even less complete metadata than my dbPoweramp rip. Is your Innuous rip even being identified in roon if the tags are largely blank or formatted by Sense differently to how roon expects? It may even be adding the comma delimiters. Have you viewed the rips contents in a 3rd party tag editor like mp3tag?

When I rip the latest disc, I not only rip it on my Zenith but I also rip it to one of my NASs using dbPoweramp.

I have just done an experiment by deleting the album from Roon (which includes removing it from the Zenith disc) and copying the folder from my NAS into the Zenith’s Auto Import folder. Roon picked it up and now the credits look identical to yours. The bogus ‘Primary Artists’ are no longer there.

I think in future I shall only rip the disc to my NAS and use that resultant folder to populate Roon.

Quite what is happening is rather perplexing. You would think that if Roon can find the Sense rip (as it obviously does), from MusicBrainz, the data would be identical. It seems about as daft as my inputting the data in the first place.

P.S. Sorry about the confusion last night about the ‘Auto Import’ folder. It was late and I called it Roon’s not Sense’s. Mea Culpa!

I am not familiar with Sense but maybe there is a configuration option to write a semi-colon “;” delimiter rather than the comma “,” delimiter you currently have? I don’t know if you have noticed but the dbPoweramp rip on your NAS does lookup Musicbrainz but is likely very incomplete just like mine. I get no composers or conductors for example. That may be a dbPoweramp setting, it may be a Musicbrainz setting, but regardless, it looks like there is enough with a dbPoweramp rip for roon to make an identification and fill in the gaps whereas with Sense there is not.

Thanks by the way for maintaining the BBC Music Magazine CD’s on MusicBrainz. Appreciated! :+1:

I think that I have opened a can of worms with this semicolon business!

I went back and had a random look at some of the 334 BBC disks and found all sorts of anomalies.

It just didn’t occur to me to question the data during those many years, I just accepted what turned up. It was only when I started to learn some of the requirements for MusicBrainz and their respective consequences, that they all became apparent. I think that I shall have to draw a line under the whole business and just make sure that I do my best at getting the input correct from now on.

I suspect that I am getting too old for all this.

I’m glad to help here. I confess that I started doing it because the presence of the data was just getting later and later and I got fed up with waiting!
