Description of Issue

Roon has been very stable until recently, and now it crashes every time that I try to start the Core. I have re-installed Windows, and re-installed Roon and restored from a recent backup. However, the same problem persists.

Event Viewer shows the same error each time:

There was a windows 10 update overnight I believe and it seems this has caused some issues with other users so far.
Firewall rules changed at all?

Unfortunately I can’t paste the whole of the Error Event, because many of the lines start with a less-than symbol, which appears to hide the text when pasted into a message here.

Please could someone in #support contact me, it’s frustrating being without music!

I will check the firewall settings if I can, but when I opened the new installation of Roon for the first time, Windows asked for firewall permission for both Roon and RAAT

This also possibly?

Particularly Blackjack post.

I had seen that post from Blackjack, and tried enabling NET Framework 3.5, but that didn’t make any difference.

Re the firewall settings - both Roon and RAAT are set to ‘private’ but not ‘public’. Does it need to be set to ‘public’ too?

If you have your network set to public zone then yes it does. If it on a private zone it doesn’t matter.

Have a look at the network settings in Windows and it should tell you what zone each interface is on

Thanks - I have just tried changing Roon.exe & RAAT to both ‘private’ and ‘public’, but Roon crashed on re-opening, so that firewall setting didn’t make any difference.

I didn’t think it would be firewall related but worth checking.
Usually if firewall related it just doesn’t work rather than crashes

Let’s see if we can get some assistance for you from @support

Some assistance from support would be much appreciated, thank you AceRimmer

Hi @Ian_Grant1,

I’m sorry to hear that this issue has been interfering with your listening. The team will more thoroughly review diagnostic logs from the Core device to try to pin down the issue, but a first glance through shows several network connectivity issues around the time of a crash.

To rule out a firewall: You can read detailed instructions for adding RAAT Server and Roon as exceptions to your Windows firewall in this article. I also recommend checking firewall settings on any Remotes you might have in use here.

Another immediate troubleshooting step is to set aside the Roon database (more thorough than an uninstall/reinstall):

  • Create a Backup of your current database
  • Exit out of Roon
  • Navigate to your Roon Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “Roon”
  • Rename the “Roon” folder to “Roon_old”
  • Reinstall the Roon App from our Downloads Page to generate a new Roon folder
  • Verify if the issue persists on a fresh database before restoring the backup

Please let me know the results. We’ll report back here if we find any direct clues in the logs. Thank you for your patience.

Hi Connor,

thank you for your reply. I have done the following:

  • checked firewall settings (both Roon & RAATserver were set as exceptions)
  • changed Roon database folder name to Roon_Old
  • downloaded & reinstalled the Roon app

The Roon app started OK, but as I was entering my login details, it crashed, with the same error as before in the Windows event logs. Here’s a copy of the error event properties:

Faulting application name: Roon.exe, version: 1.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x62a332af

Can you give me any further assistance please? I don’t know what UCRTBASE_CLR0400.DLL is or how Roon should interact with it. Is this a Roon problem or a Windows problem?

Thanks,

Ian

Hi @Ian_Grant1,

The errors appear to be related to your .NET framework; it’s possible a file is corrupted.

Can you try to reinstall .NET Runtime and see if that helps? You can uninstall from Control Panel and then reinstall from the Microsoft website: Download .NET 6.0 (Linux, macOS, and Windows).

Please let me know if that helps.

Do you encounter this error when minimizing or maximizing the window at all? You mentioned logging in triggered the crash - do you remember the last action you performed prior to the crash?

Thank you again for working with us to chase this down.

Description of Issue

Roon has been stable for years, and whilst recent problems (in past couple of weeks) of audio stopping appear to have been resolved by the latest software update, Roon Core now repeatedly crashes. It now crashes within a few moments of opening the software.

Hi Connor,

I installed .NET Runtime (it didn’t appear to be installed, perhaps because I’d recently reinstalled Windows 10 to see if that would solve the Roon problem) and Roon appeared to be stable. Windows then did an update, and Roon became unstable again. I repaired .NET Runtime and Roon has been stable for several days until this morning when it crashed again with the same error as previously described in this thread showing in Event Viewer.

Is there any diagnostic check that you can do to establish if I have a hardware problem or if it is Roon software please? My Roon system has been ultra stable for years (since I first started using it in, I think, 2016) but now I’m cautious that every time I use it, it will crash.

Regards,

Ian

Hi Connor,

My Roon Core ran OK for 5 days but crashed again (same error related to ucrtbase_clr0400.dll). I had been using it intermittently but I was not playing any music or interacting with Roon when it crashed.

Can you help me shed any light on what might be the problem please?

Ian

Hi @Ian_Grant1,

We recommend this free program. Please let us know the results.

I also recommend you try running the System File Checker tool to look for corrupted system files. Here’s a little more information.

The team will be watching for your reply and will continue to investigate whether or not this is related to any known issues in the meantime.

Connor,

Thanks for the suggestions. I ran Passmark’s ‘Memtest’ as suggested, which passed 100%. I will send you the results by e-mail (or let me know if there is some other way to send the file).

I also ran System File Checker, and that completed OK without reporting any issues.

Do you have any other ideas as to what might be causing the error (Roon, or my PC?)

Regards,

Ian
