Describe the issue

I have been running a Roon core on a QNAP NAS for years, without issue. Recently I noted that my roon app on iOS couldn't find the Roon server. It was also blank on the NAS. I then updated the firmware on the NAS, and the Roon app on the NAS. The Roon core then reappeared on the NAS, but was still invisible to the iOS app. I could connect to it via ARC at that stage, but it is now not connecting on ARC either. The NAS seems to be running fine. I backed-up, deleted and reinstalled Roon on the NAS, and, again, it is visible on the NAS UI, but the iOS app is still unable to find the server, even when entering the IP address manually. I have also reinstalled the Roon app on iOS to no avail. Please advise as to next steps?

Describe your network setup

I have a ubiquiti USW-Lite-8 POE switch and separate ubiquiti firewall. These have recently been installed, however, the Roon issue pre-dates this equipment, with a previous Asus router in place prior. There has been no change to the Roon issue with either set-up

Hello @nickcpw,

Thank you for reaching Roon support.

Would you kindly make sure that the Roon application on the iOS device have the access to the Local Network.

  • Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
  • Scroll down and tap Privacy.
  • Select Local Network.
  • You’ll see a list of apps. Toggle the switch next to each app to grant or deny access.

Thanks Vadim. I did as you suggested, but Roon is not in the list of apps requesting local network access, so there is no toggle to switch…

Hello @nickcpw

Thank you for the update. Would you kindly share a few screenshots from the iOS devices?

Hello @nickcpw ,

Thanks for the screenshot. That is very strange, Roon app should most definitely be showing in that list. Is there any change in behavior if you delete Roon, reboot the iOS device, and then reinstall the Roon app?

Thanks Noris. By way of update, I discovered that the problem was to do with ExpressVPN. Once I turned the VPN off, the roon server became discoverable on the local network again. Would be worth noting for future updates. Many thanks, N

Hi @nickcpw,

Thanks for letting us know about Express VPN interfering with discoverability. I’m glad the Roon server is findable again. Is there anything else we can help you with?

Hi @nickcpw,

VPNs can interfere with the multicast device announcements that allow for server, client, and endpoints to discover and connect with each other. We usually recommend toggling VPNs off, although some users have posted their specific settings combinations that allow for device discovery over in Tinkering.

This thread will now close for housekeeping, but please reach out in a new technical support request if anything comes up and we’ll respond promptly. Thanks again!
